Over the past week I thought my eyes were going bad. Each time I looked through my viewfinder everything was out of focus no matter how many times I re-focued. Looking at live view everything was sharp. Ahhh!

Then it hit me, the diopter adjustment must have been bumped. A quick spin of the dial and everything is clear again! Hooray, I don't need glasses after all :)

In case you don't know how to adjust it, here you go: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg6J-n7NDgk

and then get some gaffers tape and whack it over the top so you don't hit it again :-)

Don't forget about it when you borrow or loan a camera, either. Loaned a camera to a friend, he was screwing up the focus--sorted it out, fixed the diopter. Got the camera back, forgot about that. Remembered soon enough though :-)

I shoot manual Nikkor Ai lenses a lot, so that's a big one for me. I learned to adjust it with precision by using a tripod and an AF lens, letting it focus on something having an obvious focus point with good bright details, and then turn off the camera and set the diopter where that focus point looks best in the viewfinder.
Setting the diopter adjustment by looking at the heads up display in the viewfinder had me manually focusing beyond the subject for a long time, until I figured out how to set the diopter using the method above. Now I get good results with manual lenses almost every shot.
