After 5 years of shooting Pentax, and all the while reading glowing reviews of their 'Limited' primes, I finally decided it was time for me to purchase one of these lenses for myself. So, after much deliberation I jumped in and purchased a lightly used DA 40mm F2.8 Limited from eBay. And having spent the morning playing with, am I ever glad I did!

Most Pentax Limiteds are diminutive in size, but the 40mm/2.8 'pancake lens' takes the cake! The build quality is outstanding.

I bought the lens, hoping it would be sharp and contrasty wide open and produce a pleasant bokeh. I can honestly say that it doesn't disappoint in any of these areas. Here's a few unedited 100% crops from F2.8 images taken this morning. Check 'em out at full size to get an idea of the IQ.

After only a few hours of playing with this lens I'm already considering selling my Sigma 17-70 and replacing it with a couple more 'Limiteds'. :)

The great thing about the Pentax system is that any lens ever made for 35mm cameras fit straight on.. I'm in heaven when I walk around the boot sales because there is always a selection of PK mount stuff.

I have been sniffing at the 40mm pancake, I am delighted you are enjoying it. I used to have a 645 film body in Japan years ago and a very old Asahi film body too, Pentax have always made great gear and their lenses are awesome.

Enjoy!

Very true. Pentax's committment to backward compatibility is to be applauded. I have 50mm/1.7 that's probably 15-20 years old and it works perfectly on current digital bodies. It will even autofocus as quickly as any other lens I own. Plus having been made for 35mm, if Pentax ever decide to go full frame, it'd likely work perfectly on that body too.
