I know it's not super convenient, but Los Lunas has three Walgreens!
Maybe try one just to see?

For less than a dollar, you could try a printing a few photos at Walgreen's and RiteAid, and see if they're any better. Or if you don't need prints immediately, try BayPhoto or MPix- both fast, inexpensive and very high quality.

You have a pretty amazing idea of how far a dollar will go. Neither BayPhoto nor MPix offer one-hour service, so they aren't any good either.

A 4x6 print is 19¢ at both places, so you could order a couple of prints from each to judge color with change to spare. I already noted that MPix and BayPhoto would take longer. If you have to have everything immediately with full color control, get a good photo inkjet printer and do it yourself.

Don't forget it would cost me about $80 to go to someplace other than Wal*Mart in person, and it would take me three hours to get there and back. And I don't need full color control, I just want it to look roughly like it is supposed to. They used to look like that every time I printed, and then it stopped, and I don't know why, and it would be nice if I could compensate for it.

If you have a nice print of one of your older files, done before the Wally world glitch, take the original file that was printed, and the print to them. Have them print the file again, and see how it compares to the earlier print.
You may be able to upload files to a different processor, like Cosco on line and have them snail mailed to you from there. It's not quite as fast as driving, but at least the prints would look right.

As I said, old files reprinted have the same problem.

Looks like it's back to what Scalvert said. Making your own prints may be the best solution if you want better control of the results and quick printing locally.

I do agree with Shannon that in your situation, it seems to make a lot of sense to do your own proof printing.

Just make sure the printer you buy has ink that can be bought at Wal-Mart! LOL!

Do they now make a ink that is waterproof that is affordable for home use?

There are (relatively) waterproof ink/paper combinations available, but I don't consider any of them "affordable for home use," which is why I do all my printing at Costco (or occassionally KodakGallery or another online printer) to real, light-sensitive photo paper.

Between paper jams, calibrations issues, and ink which costs thousands of dollars/gallon (see this only slightly-dated article) I don't even have a printer at home.

Printers are sold using the razor blade business model—the printers are dirt cheap, but you have to keep buying ink for eternity. And wouldn’t you know, it turns out that printer ink, especially for photos, is probably the most expensive substance per volume you’ll ever buy—more expensive than gold, oil, perfume, even blood in most cases. If you’re buying name-brand ink cartridges, which typically hold a few milliliters of ink, you’re shelling out the equivalent of between $3,000 and $5,000 per gallon. (Suddenly, spending $45 to fill your car’s gas tank doesn’t seem so extravagant, eh?) Just as an idea of how valuable this particular golden goose is, more than 40 percent of HP’s $2.63 billion operating profits from last quarter came from it’s imaging and printing group alone. In other words, ink keeps printer companies in the black.

I once bought an inexpensive injet to make some transparencies for someone ... when I ran out of ink, I found that buying a new printer would be $59, while a set of replacement cartridges for the printer I already had would cost $69 ... :-(

The Kodak multifunction printers do a decent job, particularly with Kodak paper, and the ink is downright cheap compared to other printers. The results won't compare to a real lab print or high end 8 or 10-color inkjet, but they're fine for proofs and snapshots.

Yep, did the same thing... actually I think I paid $39 for the printer (a Lexmark cheapy bought in an emergency @ Wal*Mart late on a Sunday evening). When I needed to replace ink, I realized I too could replace the whole printer more cheaply. IMO, that puts the exclamation point on what has become an insane situation.

Edit for typo

In "fairness," there is a *possibility* that the "starter cartridges" which came pre-installed in the printer I got did not contain as much ink as the refill/replacement cartridges ...

I was actually told this when I bought a new printer a few weeks ago. Dunno if it's true or not.

I have NEVER gotten a print from Walmart that I was happy with... I use this lab //www.blackriverimaging.com/index.asp I have been very very happy with their work, customer service, and PRICES! exmp a 8x10 for is 2.15 and they ship FAST and orders over 10.00 are free shipping!!! My only gripe is their software set up for downloading, the first time you use it, you may want to call a customer rep first and make them talk you thru it! but again toll free number and I think someone is in there until 9pm central time zone.

Even if -- then it's pretty deceptive in the first place ... rather like checking out a rental car and finding it has only a half-tank of gas ...

when i first started doing on-site printing i bought 3 mid-range HPs. every now and then i would use two in tandem, but mainly just one of them. one died within the first year, was covered under warranty, and was replaced by HP. a few years later, the other one died; being out of warranty, it was put out to pasture. about a year later, i needed two printers in tandem.

so...i took the as yet unboxed third printer out, put in some ink cartridges, and IT WOULD NOT PRINT! it gave me an invalid ink cartridge error - and these were brand new HP cartridges! WTF?!?

i get HP on the phone, mad as hell, and find out that it actually needed those starter cartridges to initialize the printer. do what?!? i had raided that third box years before when i needed cartridges and didn't have time to go out and buy them. and there was NOTHING in the documentation or on the ink boxes that said, "These cartridges MUST be used to initialize the printer." at this point, i had had the printer for nearly four years, it was no longer being manufactured, and they no longer made "starter cartridges". i raised hell with them that their improper instructions and labeling had rendered my printer useless, and that there was no way they could have an implied "printer must be initialized by date" without making that known to the consumer.

in the end, i learned a little and got a new printer out of them.

pain in the @$$, all of them...

Wherever you go, or don't go, you need to have a print made using someone else's process to show that it's Wally's machine/process and not your file that's messed up. Having a print made and getting it mailed to you will serve that purpose as would printing it yourself or having someone else print it on their printer. If it comes out with the same messed up look, it's your file, if not, it's probably Wally's fault.

Even if you do prove that it's Wally, not you, they may not care enough to find and fix the problem.

If I were you, I'd just suck it up and buy a decent printer. I like my Canon PIXMA Pro 9500, but for your purposes, that may be overkill, then again, it will let you get the most out of those files from your MKIV

Great printer, I like it every time I print, although I'm not sure it can win the competition (price technically) with letting your prints done. But it's nice to get the prints just the way you want and not having to wait days to see the final result.

I've got a Canon PIXMA Pro 9000. The output is awesome, although the ink can be pricey. You can get one HERE for $239 shipped after a $200 rebate with coupon code "DEALNEWS10".
