Ok...we can use an "old" photo in our entry but it can only be used as a texture.

So if I have a 3 year old photo of some "waves" at the beach, can I use that to fill in my shirt or even a face? Or does the "old" photo have to be say...a picture of a BRICK to use as a texture?

I hope this makes sense.

So getting a texture from an outside source is not ok? I have to have original copies to send in for verification?

I'd go to site council for that one. I think I remember someone using fire to fill in eyes, they thought they were using it as a texture and sit council didn't see it that way. Using waves to fill in a shirt sounds too much the same as what he did. I would want to make sure before I did it and got disqualified.

"Texture" can come from any source. You don't have to be the creator of the source file. The kicker, of course, is whether your use of the source file is deemed to be "textural". The problem with the fiery eyes was that the maker of the image borrowed some fire from the internet (presumably from Prometheus) and the pasted it into the eyes of his image as a reflected OBJECT. It wasn't "texture" by any stretch of the imagination. It was opaque. Texture, pretty much by definition, isn't laid in opaque, it's a semi-transparent layer.

Look at it this way: if he'd added a clip-art image of a lizard's eyes to replace his own (vertical slits and so forth), he'd have had to have shot the source image, that wouldn't be texture, right?

If your "texture" file is a brick wall, and you apply that texture to a non-brick, existing surface, that's one thing ΓΆ€” but if you bring the wall in and use it as a wall, that's another thing altogether. If you want to import a brick wall into your composition, you need to have shot it yourself within the challenge dates.

My advice is, be *very* careful using *any* external file as "texture." The SC has a very strict, almost draconian definition of texture. If there is *any* question in your mind, submit the entry to the SC for review about 2 days before the deadline.

Thanks all....I sent SC a note.

My examples of course are not going to be in the entry...but the same "technique" will !

According to Bear....I think I'll be ok. I"m going to start working on it. I do have another idea that wouldn't require an outside texture but I can't enter two...can I ?

Well, they *HAVE* specifically told us what I said; they have said that the DPC texture library that some of the overlay people created is OK to use, as textures, in expert editing. And it only makes sense, since it's definitely OK to use photoshop's textures, as textures, and THOSE are images not created by the photographer, let alone not within the time frame of the challenge.
