Hello everyone, first off this is my first post and stumbled across this site doing some camera research. What great community, so glad to be joining here!
I've been itching to get back into photography, I shot film for a few years with an old pentax ME super and I'm ready to move into the digital world of it all. The only thing, is that I want full frame. I'm very impatient, and I don't want to buy something I'm going to regret. Doing my research, the 5D M2 just seems awesome. I already went to a store to familiarize myself with it, held it, messed with functions and loved it. Ive been reading a 5D Mark III is in the works.... Should I wait or just dive in?
Also, can anyone speak for the 5d m2' versus a cropped 7D? My other choice was to go with the 7D and hold for the 5D mark III... Video isn't a huge thing for me. Nice, but not necessary... Any considerations for other camera are welcomed.
I shoot landscapes, family events, portraits of artists in their environments, low light... No sports or anything like that. Eventually will be doing weddings along with an experienced photographer. I'm not invested in any system other than pentax film, not very many lenses either, so canon or nikon is what I'm aiming for only because of the lens choices.
Thank you all!
Chris

As someone who did the opposite of you - went from Canon film to Pentax digital - I wonder whether you still have any of your Pentax lenses? If so, and if you can live with a cropped sensor DSLR, then I'd strongly recommend you check out the Pentax K-5. In keeping with Pentax's long held philosophy of backwards compatibility, even their 20+ year old manual focus lenses still work perfectly on current bodies.
Oh,and if you decide to go for the 5DII and have a bunch of lovely old Pentax primes lying around that you won't need any more, then I'd be happy to take 'em off your hands... :)

I had both the 7D and 5DMII and ended up selling the 7D. It just can't compare to the 5DMII and you will be very happy with that camera if you go with Canon. |

5DMII is limited only in shooting sporting events because of only 4 frames per second. I don't think the weather resistance is as good as is possible. It does everything else wonderfully. 21 megapixels per shot creates some large files, especially if you shoot raw, so you will need large cards and a computer with a big hard drive.
The video from the 5D is also awesome, and I have noticed that a lot of professional videographers are using it for that purpose. You really can't go wrong for weddings, portraits, landscapes, and nature. Enjoy
Edit to add: Low light shooting is amazing. I get useable photos at up to ASA 3200

I realy love my 5D Mark II. I checked at B&H and they are "temporarily unavailable". I can only guess that the tsunami in Japan has either made them a very rare commodity or radioactive. |

You'd be extremely happy with the 5D MkII, I have no doubt of that. The question of "should I wait" is a valid one, given that the historical timeline puts a potential announcement of a successor only a few months once the MkIII is out and you can scout out the early adopter reports. At that point, you'll be in a position to wait if you need to, without worry that you're not enjoying shooting in the meantime.
I'm playing the waiting game myself right now. I would love to upgrade, but I love my original 5D, and so I can comfortably wait, and skip a generation. |

I don't think the 7D is bad at all, but, ahhhhh, the Mark II. Like single malt scotch... |

One thing to note is that the 5DM2 has a flash sync speed of 1/200, which is more like 1/160 in reality. On the 7D it's 1/250. This can be a problem if you shoot outdoors with strobes and don't have the option to shoot in the shade and you don't want to crop. I wish Canon would get with the program and make these types of cameras sync at 1/500.
