Hey, someone told me today that it is better to have an external card reader and take the card out of your camera to upload the pictures to the computer than to plug in the usb cable directly to the camera because it wears it down. Anyone else hear this? Right now I just plug the cable into the camera but if it wears the camera down, I will look into buying a card reader.

Thanks,
Ryan

im more afraid of mishandling the cards than wearing down usb cable ports

I'm sure it contributes to wear and tear on the camera, but I don't know how much. I use a card reader personally, only because it is a much faster transfer time than with the camera. Instead of waiting for maybe 10 minutes to transfer a card with the camera, it takes about 1 minute with the card reader. Hope this helps.

It uses battery power, puts some wear and tear on the actual USB socket, and makes your camera unusable during that time. With a card reader you can switch cards and keep using the camera, or do as I do and leave it in its padded case while I mess around on the computer.

Some older cameras (like mine) have a serial (not USB) connection to the computer, and that is slower than ....

I'd be far more worried about wearing out (or bending!) the tiny contacts on the memory card socket than the USB plug, which is presumably designed to be used thousands of times. The speed is a good point, I hope my next camera (no time soon) will have FireWire or USB2...

One of the advantages of my really old SmartMedia cards ... slider contacts, no pins!
