I was out shooting a few macros today and while my friend was using his posh 550EX flash I tried my onboard 300D flash. I was quite surprised to get pretty reasonable exposure and sharpness. Just thought I'd pass on my positive experience with the onboard flash for macros.
Edit: That shot is straight out of camera, btw, and VERY cropped. Also, taken with a Canon 85/1.8 and 22mm extension tube. Shutter: 1/200, ISO: 400, aperture: f/5.6.

And once you are silding out of warrantee, the russian hack makes the onboard flash soooo much better. dial it up, dail it down. Half the time my dg500 is slaved to the onboard flash now. |

It's extraordinarily useful.
Especially in a middling light condition when using Aperture Priority on a smaller (Larger number) setting. With the flash you can use a closer to 100 ISO setting.
One series of test shots, I discovered that I could dial the ISO to 200 as opposed to over 400 in order to get a quick shutterspeed out of the camera. Just by using the on camera flash.
Keep experimenting! It could only help you learn to take better images. |

Yea, the only reason I abstain from using it is that (at least on my 10d) some of my lenses are too big and they'll cast a very annoying shadow. |

That's one nice thing about the 300D - the flash arm is much higher (about 0.75"), which helps for that, as well as red-eye, etc. |

take a photo of a buddy of yours and tell me it works well...
i'll use it when the available light is bright enough alone, but the subject isn't facing the light directly..
