Hi Everyone....

So with all the resulting mess in Japan i realized that prices and availability of either cannon or Nikon was going to be limited. I've been keeping an eye on a lot of different sites to see what used bodies would be available and prices. I finally found one way too good to pass up on. Its a year and a half old D700 with only 700 clicks! Older guy that loved film and never made the switch. So i'm very happy to have an almost new D700 for an awesome price.

This is my question to you Nikon or camera guys out there. Obviously this takes a CF card. Has anyone found a CF to SD card converter that works? I still have my D90 and will keep it for the time being, and i have a few 16gig SD cards that i'd hate to see sit around. I also know the bigger CF cards run really expensive.

Any solutions out there other than buying larger cf cards?

Actually they can be pretty inexpensive.

Fry's has a 16 GB card for $35.

You will not find an SD to CF adapter. They don't exist.

Well, they do exist.
But, I'd hazard to guess they serve as a big bottleneck in performance and you might as well just buy some slow cf cards at that point.
A 4gb or 8gb card can be had reasonably so long as you don't get the highest speed, and even the less than really fast ones work decently with the fps. I've got both Extreme IV's w/ UDMA/ESP and II's and while there is certainly a difference, it's not as hugel as the marketing types want you to think, even when shooting at 8 fps with the grip.

Id been researching and just wasn't sure. I'd found this, (link below) for the EYefi combo i just didn't know if there was anything else out there.

I'd rather get use out of the SD cards if I could. But i guess i'll just buy some of the CF cards.

Thanks!

So what would you recommend. I'm not massively concerned about getting into the 8fps range really, not the type of shooting i do. Just a reasonable but quality middle of the road CF?

Personally I've used all Sandisk, some use all Lexar, both companies are good. A decent number of users on here use Transcend, as well, and those are typically cheaper.
With the Sandisks, I mentioned various speeds- I've got some Extreme II's and IV's (I think I have a couple III's, too...), as well as newer Extreme version, and they all work fine. I can get back to you on how much slower the II's are than the others, but I seem to remember I get maybe 2-3 shots less before my buffer fills, at 8fps, so the difference isn't huge like marketing makes it seem.

B & H as 4 GB Kingston CF cards starting at $11.49.

I have a few Kingston cards, no issues.

They do exist. I got one from Henry's. It works great.

I use SDHC cards with it without issue in the Canon 40D.

I stand corrected. But still, you could get 4 4GB cards for the price of the adapter.

I got it because I use a CF firewire card reader on my desktop but my Fuji camera uses SD cards.

How fast a CF card can you get for $10?

133x for 14.95

They didn't list the speed in the one for $11.49.

Here's an 8 GB 133x for $22.95

I have the latter of the two but try not to use it when taking action photos... Maybe it's just me but I find it slow.

Congrats on the upgrade! If you love your D90, you're going to adore the D700 :-)

FWIW, I popped a 30mb/sec (non UDMA) and compared it to a 45 mb/sec (with UDMA) and the buffer took one more shot before filling on the 45mb/sec. It was more noticeable watching how long the full buffer took to write to the card after that, but I had not way to be terribly accurate with things.
