...leave a comment and then delete?

This occured during a recent challenge. I was entered and watched rollover as usual. I voted on about 10% of the images and checked the forums for scores and entered my score. I commented on several shots. On one shot, I commented something like,

"I like this photo, one of the best so far. Not sure if the DPC voters will forgive the blah..blah...blah...but I don't think it makes much difference, it will not affect my vote."
I went to bed about an hour later.

Before morning I woke up and got some water. My phone is nearby so I saw through the new Android app that I had a comment. I viewed the comment and saw something like,

"I like your photo except for the blah...blah..blah...but as long as you're not lowering your vote on my blah...blah...blah... I will not vote lower on yours"

A few hours later, the comment was gone. At that point I began wondering how that person would know that "my" entry belonged to the member that commented on her photo.

I do remember the member that left the comment but now wonder why such a comment would be deleted. It was not really a bad comment but I am wondering how he/she pretty much knew or at least researched to find that I was the one who left the comment.

Thanks

***The commenter was NOT RH*** :)

I saw something similar a couple years ago, but I don't remember the details, so I couldn't swear to it. Maybe a few folks with admin rights can see all?

I thought it was kind of strange that someone would indirectly open their entry ID to me and then delete the comment.

Maybe they thought better of it? I've read veiled and not so veiled comments in threads about people who know a secret way to figure out who each photo belongs to. I feel that's cheating, but that's just me.

I do that occasionally if I put effort into a comment and it's not marked as helpful. I figure it can't all be give from me!
Also, I might remove a comment if, on review, I realised it wasn't a good one.

It really wasn't a bad comment...it just referenced my comment on their photo - that is why it struck me as strange. Then a few hours later...deleted...stranger still !

For a long time, I thought "Save for web..." removed ALL the EXIF data from my challenge entries. Only recently did I realize that my embedded copyright was not scrubbed by the "Save for web..." utility. Some EXIF data is "stickier" than other EXIF data. I think the utility "assumes" that if the photographer placed that copyright message there, it was placed there on purpose and meant to be retained. I can only assume the very few people that noticed my copyright hanging out there did not alter their vote.

Most recently, I have not been including any EXIF data with my images exported out of Apple's Aperture. However, that means my images do not contain the embedded copyright, which I really like to have in place. So, I am contemplating including my embedded copyright and trust that the "somewhat hidden" information will not alter scores in challenges.

After all, it should not matter whose image appears in the voting window. In a perfect world, each vote would be cast based on the caliber of the image and the relevance to the challenge.

I assume you are talking about the "cheating" element of a reply to this post. If so, and your observations are correct, how can someone see any exif data on a photo on DPC? To my knowledge, the only way to look is to screen capture the photo. Is exif data actually still stuck on that way?

You can answer in a PM if this may open the door to cheating.

I'm not sure about earlier versions, but in CS5 when you save for web you have the option to save all metadata, no metadata, copyright info, copyright and camera info, or all except camera info. So 5 different options. I don't recall what the default is because I change it depending on whether it's a challenge entry or a portfolio image. I think it's very useful.

But... how does someone on dpc see it on a challenge entry?

No, you cannot read EXIF Data from a screen capture.

i could tell you, but then your votes and comments would come under suspicion ;-)

it's not that difficult, if you really want to find out (assuming that the data is embedded).

I thought there was an overlay on every submission that prevented downloading?

Anyway, why are people cheating? Is there a big cash prize the rest of us don't know about?

Hadn't really given it any consideration, but you're correct in that it's not difficult - just checked it out to verify (had to look at non-challenge entries to find any with exif still in place).

Too late! Donald Trump already has a team on it.

I'm working on a dandy little program that will detect who and when someone has looked at my exif during a challenge. So pretty soon I may get me a ribbon one way or another.

I've hired three Russian hackers to detect when a voter mouses over the "1" - it will launch a Denial of Service attack on them. I plan on configuring it for 1 through 7.

ooooh!! I'd chip in to support this project! Where do I send my millions?

Oh no no no, Wendy. I'm pretty sure you already have a similar program already in use. :P

Nope -- that was my mistake. I only configured it through 6! I'm looking for the new and improved through 7 version!

You need to have them just fix it so any number thats clicked will automatically randomly count it as a 8, 9 or 10. ROFLMAO

A denial of service will throw up too many flags

How about viruses for 1s, 2s, & 3s, and denial of service for 4s. 5s just get a network error. That should spread it around enough...

I did not know we could delete comments...if we can PLEASE someone tell me how...

I've been working on my comments for the Flowers Challenge today...and at one point I made a comment on one photo hit the arrow button to advance to the next photo and the comment moved to the next photo...lucky for me I noticed...did my copy and past and went back and low and behold it was back to the original "Leave your comment...yada yada"

Weird

If you mean "during the voting", then...

Look at the voting thumbnails: see how each one has like a little notepaper icon at the bottom right of the text? When you have commented on an image, that turns from white to gold. You can click on that icon, from thumbs, and it will do one of two things:

1. If the icon is WHITE, it will open the comment-but-not-vote field and you can leave a comment without voting.

2. If the icon is GOLD, it will open the previously-made comment for editing or for deleting altogether, and this can be done without voting or without altering the earlier vote.
