Is there anyone online who could maybe assist me with trying to install a wireless capable printer to my wireless capable new computer, wirelessly?? I do not want to do the Plug and play with USB.

HP Photosmart Plus to the TP Link wireless adapter.

My printers are plugged into my router and accessed through the network. Is that what you're looking for?

When I did my wireless printer a couple of years ago, I had to use a USB wired connection to set everything up, then remove the wire and allow the printer to find the PC.

Never did work that well, I now use wired printer and scanner as I know then that both will function correctly.

Yes, that's exactly how to do it...at least with most HP models. The reason you use USB initially (pamb) is because you have to set up the wireless information, workgroup, ip settings etc. which are then loaded into the printer via the USB connection. After that your desktop or laptop will see the printer wireless.

I'm heading to the store shortly, but I'm sure someone else might be able to help you now if they are available. I'll watch the thread for later just in case.

for sure you need to install it with the wire first, it will discover all your router settings and then be good to go.

THANK YOU everyone for your replies. I really like this DP Challenge site for the help you get on anything and everything!

Going forward -
At this point there is no separate router, just the printer and the 'puter.
I got completely frustrated by about 1am last night, so did install directly from the USB Plug and Play, then put the disks into the 'puter.
So... it works when directly plugged in.... what now? I don't know what to do when you guys say 'After that your desktop or laptop will see the printer wireless'. How do I do this bit?

My kids and I are going on a 'photo rally' (photo treasure hunt thing, I think) now, but I will definitely check back this afternoon for further advice. Thanks so much people. I don't consider myself a complete technical blonde, but this has been driving me nuts and I really appreciate the help.

You can only have a wireless printer if you have a wireless network it's attached to. In other words, if you get the internet by attaching your computer to a jack in the wall, you can't have a wireless printer. If you can move your computer around in your house and still get internet without connecting to anything, you have a wireless network.

A wireless network basically consists of a "router" that plugs into the jack you currently plug your computer into (if that's what you do) and then broadcasts a signal your computer can pick up from anywhere within a certain radius. Your printer gets plugged into the router, and your computer can send signals to the printer through the router, which then directs them to the printer.

Make sense?

Without a router you can still set your printer up to work wireless with your computer/laptop IF you have a wireless card in the computer/laptop as well. You would have to do it using "ad hoc" mode.

You should be able to Google/Bing "set up wireless printer ad hoc" or something similar including those terms and get detailed instructions for your Operating System etc.

Dave is correct.

Unless placement is an issue, I think you are going to be happier using USB. Wireless can be unstable, so if you don't need the sharing and can place the two together, USB is the way to go.

That being said, I have two wireless printers and one networked via Ethernet shared among 5 computers in my house. Once you get the settings right, it works well.

I have not read the post here...but I've had my "new wireless printer" for about a year now...still don't have the scanning hooked up...barely can fax...ya...I'm NOT offering ANY kind of help here...totally dangerous territory for me...and you...

I agree with the others, USB or Network Share is the way to go if you can do it that way, however if you still want to set it up as Wireless and need more help after looking online I would be happy to give you a hand. Just send me a PM if you get to that point :)
