I am curious about this.
On average, how far do you travel in order to get a shot for any of the challenges on this site? Do you tend to shoot just stuff in your own basic neighborhood, or do you drive distances in order to get that perfect shot?
Studio shots in your own house not included ;-)
I personally shoot very locally. I don't have a car, and only bike, so if the shoot isn't within a ten minute bike ride I generally don't get the shot. Its been getting me frustrated lately, especially as I see people post glorious landscape shots that just aren't available super locally to me. |

I do quite a bit of driving for many of my shots, but not too far from my house. Most I really go (other than when taking photos on vacation, of course) is about 25 miles from my house. There is just so much to explore locally. |

1/2 of my shots are in my house or in my back yard. 40% are within 15 minutes of my house. The rest are farther afield. |

Unless I̢۪m away on business virtually all of my entries are taken during the 1hr trip on my way home from work. I̢۪m lucky enough to work near a city but live in a national park so I can usually get a variety of outdoor subjects (just can̢۪t seem to photograph them too well). There have been challenges that I knew of locations that would really suit (especially around Sydney Harbour) but as I enter challenges without my wife knowing (not a fan of my hobby) I usually stick the 1hr trip with an added 10mins for a bit of shooting.

Most of my entries are taken within an hour of home. My favorite target rich environment, the Fort Worth Stockyards, is only about 20 minutes away, and a convenient stop on the way home from work. At one time, I felt I was being lazy going to the same good area so frequently, but what I have realized is that it has been a fascinating ongoing exercise. Every time I go there, I am looking at the location in a different way, for a different topic. I'e probably got 3 dozen challenge entries from this small locale, and they are not all the same thing.

It depends for the shot. Some landscape stuff I can do within a bike ride from my house, some I drive several hours for. But that's sorta misleading... A lot of my trips I would take anyway, for other purposes as well, it's just that photography serves as a great "get off your ass and go on that trip" thing. My mountain shots tend to be about a 2 hour each way drive, same with any shots from the prairie. Basically, I'll use challenges as excuses to myself to do stuff instead of letting plans get bogged down by other complications. |

I travel a long distance of 10 feet.. whether I have to or not!
Really, so far, they have all been close, mostly my living room. However, once things start to warm up more ill be going farther, we travel all over New England a couple times a month.

Most of my shooting is done within a couple miles of my house. I moved here to be close to things I want to shoot, actually. About as far as I will usually go is to Provincetown, 30 miles or so down-cape, and that not often. Usually, "far afield" means 8-11 miles down-cape to Orleans/Eastham.
Of course, if I'm traveling, that's a different story. I'm currently shooting for challenges 3000 miles from home.

%99 of my entries are taken within a mile or two from my home. for a few of my good spots, I have to travel about 10-20 min to get to. Occasionally I will enter one that is taken in my home town when I go visit my parents. Not that I wouldn't love to enter one from some exotic vacation I took. :) |
