Hey guys, got a beginner question for you all today.
I was asked by my cousin to shoot her engagement party. Problem is, I have never done something like this... Anyone want to give me just a simple rundown of what I should be looking for? Common photographs that are taken at engagement parties? The different types of candid type shots? Things like this.
I told her I will do it for free being that I have never done anything like this and not to expect professional work or anything. SO with that being said a simple outline would be nice to follow. This is the first place I am going for ideas so while I wait for a response I will be all over google looking for engagement party photographs.
Thanks in advanced! :) |

I'd shoot only with the 50mm 1.8 you have (I assume it's going to be indoors). Do you have a flash? If so, you'll want to bounce it or buy something like an 80/20.
Other than that...just lots of candid shots, some small group shots, and put the focus on the couple and the mood. |

Actually the party is an outside party. Which to me seemed sorta weird until she informed me later (after I posted the original forum thread post) that it is a "vintage surfer" theme. That being said it is a party from 5:30 until after sunset. I don't have an external flash which is unfortunate because I would love to play around with some lighting effects after dark!

This is what I was thinking. Should I do some specific style or shots? Or just go with whatever feels right at the time? Basically what I am asking is.. Is there any traditional shots that I NEED to take other than the candid ones during the party.

Engagement parties aren't really traditional. There's usually an engagement session the couple will do before the wedding, sometimes a bridal shoot for traditional stuff, and then they'll get a bunch of traditional shots at the wedding.
As the sun goes down, you'll still need to switch to the 50 1.8...same as indoors.
I'd rent an sb900 and use it every day until the shoot so you know how to work it. |

I am unable to rent a flash unfortunately. :(
Being a broke college student is not fun. Maybe later on when I get a steady job and what not!
Thanks for your suggestions again! :)
