This widget is possibly the most epic win of the 2011

I'm very happy about the reaction this is getting. Thanks for all the happy responses about this! :)
-----
Lots to respond to here so bear with the long message.
Firstly, I did get a response from Langdon about my other score monitor for the PC.
Originally posted by Langdon: Hey Niall,

Cheers,

He seemed pretty happy about it (and that's storing the vote-by-vote scores, which is against the TOS).
The widget is a stripped down version of this program (there's no score storing, trending here, or a vote-by-vote calculation here), and it's on a different platform. I didn't see why a reduced-feature implementation would require his permission again.
I'm not trying to sneak around grey areas here. I just didn't (and still don't) see why this would require supplementary permission.
Originally posted by alanfreed: Also consider this scenario... imagine that Langdon was about to release his own Droid/iPhone app and charge for it. This would then be a competing app. Again, this is not based on any knowledge of such a thing... I'm just exposing the potential problems here. |
I don't see why competition here is a bad thing. If he does release an app for the market (and it's not free) I'll remove my free one and match his price. I'm not trying to squeeze him out of the market here. I'm trying to provide what people actually asked for. It took me two to three weeks to learn Java, learn how to program android apps, program a basic working version, iron out bugs, implement features, rework the code three times, and release it here. People have been asking for these apps for as long as I've been here--probably longer. It took a lot of work to achieve this, but it's certainly doable in 10 months. If he was working on an app it would be released by now. Or it certainly should.
You might then be concerned with the fact that there's a payed version on there. First consider how I marketed this here. I have a free and payed version, both equally functional. I didn't ask anyone to pay for the app, but if they felt the app being of sufficient quality to pay for, then donate towards the time and effort put into this.
I did think that there might be some issue about me getting money for this which is why there're two versions. I also payed $25 to be able to put the app on the market. Out of my own money. For all you android users. I think it's reasonable to provide a means of getting that back
alanfreed, I understand your concerns. And I'm more than willing to reassure you about my good intentions. But how can I? You want to see the source? Sure. I'll even make it an open source project (I was intending to anyway). But how can you know that I haven't taken out the "sendUsernameAndPasswordsToNiallOTuama" function (which doesn't exist!)?
The only pages that my widget reads from are the homepage and the update scores link. If you want to reassure yourself you might be able to use a web-service sniffer on the app and see what URLs it's posting to.
However, I'll submit a ticket now just in case you're right.

That's very surprising... it should work off the cuff. But at least it's working!

I think it's a rollover issue that I'm looking into.
I assume pressing the update button doesn't fix it?
Try removing the widget and then reapplying it. I think that should fix it. If not let me know!

Neither pressing the update button or removing widget fixed it. |

I had the same issue. If you just shut your phone completely down and restart, it works fine. |

LOL....nice job on the app.it is doinv what it says. Will get paid version tonight to help with the production cost.
Also amazed at the password hacking bs. All apps that ask you to login have thepotential for abuse. BTW....next time someone gets pissed about a comment ill just say ...not me...I was hacked.....Ahh Oh...... |

Glad ye all like it :)
By the way. If anyone has any suggestions I'll try to implement them. Currently on the list are:
* Select the background colour of the widget
* Select the opacity of the widget
* Select order of the rows of the table
* Select times where you aren't notified of changes/PMs (for sleeping/work etc)
* Vibration length

I dunno. Where passwords are concerned we must be careful. I could (very easily) get all this. Obviously I'm not. But it would be so easy that we should at least be aware/vigilant of the thing.

Same. |
It won't "open" because it is a widget.
Niall had been working his butt off on this thing and it shows. Thanks again! |
For this to work on your phone, you have to hold down a blank area on your home screen, then choose DPC from the list, and it will take up 1/2 of the screen, so move your other widgets around to ensure you have enough space. I couldn't get it at first either. :) Now it works like a dream!!!
Thanks so much! |
I had similar issues until I read this.
Great job Niall... now I just have to submit some photos. |

Of course, to be fair, there are many ways into a system that aren't password related, and even so, I'm willing to bet a brute-force attack could easily compromise many accounts here (really, how many of you are actually using a secure password, number+letters+special chars/unusual patterns?)..
But yeah, I suppose it's potentially possible that you could have slipped in such a "feature" - I just feel that this was a non-issue, considering the fact that you are a person known to the community here, and such an action on your part would be out of character and is therefore highly improbable at best. |

The app is Langdon approved.
The donation app has been taken down cause I read through the TOS and found a part that I didn't notice before (and I did read them! Twice! It was a painful time).
Sorry to those who have downloaded the donate app. I believe you can get a refund for it. Thank you so much for buying it! I'm really chuffed about it! :)
I'll probably put in a 'buy me a beer' button or something in the preference screen.

I was going to go that route, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I'll guess buy you a beer instead.

Business is business. I would ask Langdon if he is willing to work out a financial deal. For every widget sold, the site would get a percent.
On another note: I have seen others use the "advantage" of having access to DPCs members. The membership here is a very targeted group....we are all here for one reason....we're all photographers. This means that any member having a photography product, be it "Editing Techniques on DVD" or "Camera Straps" and is allowed to advertise in the forums, should offer, or if asked, give a percent to the site.
I know some may say that the Widget is different in that it is "charging" for something that is offered on DPC for free. However, this is not so. The widget has a huge advantage over the site in reporting your current score. For better or worse, one can check scores with a glance down at their smartphone, this may be at stoplights, the library, dinner, etc..(Yikes)
In addition, if I'm not mistaken, the widget likely scores a hit on the site every time it updates. I have mine set to update each minute. This translates into higher rankings in the Web World for DPC. I know little about the finances of the Web but I imagine MORE page views is a GOOD thing.
Again, I have seen products sold via DPC that costs upwards of $400. Now I'm not sure if any previous member offered to share the profit with the site, but I can say that I haven't seen it mentioned. You worked on a product that was wanted but no one took the time to do. To me, this is a good opportunity for Langdon to make a few extra bucks to maintain the site while allowing the members to peer at and moan about their scores wherever their travels take them.
Good Luck.

He does have a concern about my having a donation version for 'business reasons' (?), and I'm currently discussing this with him. What I'll probably do is take down the donation version and add one of those 'buy me a beer' buttons somewhere.

I will, however, trade your purchase for... 6 long comments :) Let me know if you want any specifically commented!
Same goes for the other two who purchased it!
Interesting thoughts, kenskid. Interesting.

Hmmmm... $3.00 CCD chip behind a plastic lens doesn't make the best lightmeter, huh?
