As a matter of fact: dodge and burn are considered basic editing in the old film days. It was the unsharp mask that was tedious and involved and advanced. However, rules are rules. |

I'm interested - what was the 'USM' technique used? |

You can use Dodge and Burn and all the other good stuff in the members' challenges. So, for you complainers about wanting to use dodge and burn, pony up your 25 bucks and start supporting this site.

Not only that, but once you join you may notice, as I recently have...
That your hair will be more shiny and full of life, your fingernails will appear impeccable and there will be a certain bounce in your step...
Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating...
I just want to get into some slightly more then Basic editing challenges as well as showcase my images here... |

Because you will not have time to bathe as you sit there madly clicking the refresh button to get the latest score.

All that time spent sitting in front of the computer will finally allow you to chew them to perfection.

With you wallet now lighter you'll be unbalanced and yes, it will look like a funny bounce.

Usually you wouldn't know unless of course it was your own photo DQed, or someone talks about their photo being DQed from a challenge. Otherwise, unless you know how many shots WERE in the challenge, and now see that there are less in the challenge, then you can probably assume we've DQed someone. The creator of this thread is talking about their own photo that was DQed from a challenge though, so that's how they know it was DQed. |

Use to be a member here. The rules became too limiting. Photography to me isn't about rules. It's about art. But that's just my opinion.
No problems here Steve. Not complaining. Just stating an opinion bud. No need to get bent outa shape... |

I personally like the rules. I like how sometimes its advanced where you can be alittle more creative with post processing and other times its basic, where your photo should speak for itself...this open a different time of creativity.... |

In a Basic Rules challenge, you can use Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and other such adjustments, as long as they are applied to the whole image. You cannot use dodge and burn because they affect some pixels and not others, which constitutes a form of "selection" not allowed under the Basic Rules. |

Create a negative of the original negative that is somewhat out of focus. Then stack the two negatives in the enlarger to get the USM effect. |

You must keep in mind that the majority of the terms used in PS are from the old film days, which too many it is still here.
Anyway several effects are possible. You take the original negative and make an underexposed copy. dependung on your need, you sandwiched the original and use the copy you made as a mask. |
