Haha, but that would do nothing for those Tuesday challenges. Could still enter and obsess about those ;-)
In all honesty, I don't think dreaming about dpc is that strange. I am sure tons of people do, but then just don't remember those dreams. I happen to be very talented at remembering all of my dreams. |

I missed this post. No I don't have a square image. Thinking of fence and POV image to put in though.

When scores drop significantly in the last day, I'm sorry but I really think that there are some deviant people out there. It does not make sense to be consistent and then plummet. I have been telling myself give it a chance, meet some new people, grow in my photography, but I can't help but feel completely turned off when this occurs and I start wondering why I even bother with this crap. I love photography, I love looking at it and I want to grow and be the best I can...but again, I feel like this is so negative at times. I'm sure it happens to others too.
So if everyone waits until the last minute and starts handing out crappy votes then what???

Try this on for size...look after voting and see if the distribution makes sense...that is does it have a bell shaped curve, or does it have an artificially high number of low votes compared to the score. If so, then you can say the voting is biased with ease. But I have found this not really to be the case at all, but that some folks that vote don't like some pictures and others do. Try not to read to much into 'when' the vote is given, just be thankful that they stopped by, viewed it, and gave you some feedback (vote, view, or comment, or all three).
Cheers! |

Try winning the brown and not receiving any comments as to why! I think I personally know why I got the brown in the free study but it would definitely help to see why 41 people though it was a 1, 2, or 3 image. Some people just vote harshly because they can.

I understand what you are saying and yes I'm really thankful for the comments that were left and the votes, but it seems to strange that scores drop significantly the last day. I have went up and down a bit the whole way, but all of a sudden a huge drop...I can't help but feel something is off with this.
I wish I did not feel turned off, but I do...I feel like this should be more positive and frankly I don't always feel like that. However, to be fair on a positive note when I have been ready to throw in the towel I get a nice comment or someone leaves me a thank you in private email that restores my faith in this process.
I hate to be a quitter and feel if I can keep trudging through this I will grow, but I this just bugs the crap out me... |

Mine dropped as well, fell bellow 5.7 which it hasnt been that low in 3 days..
My only thoughts on this are that maybe the participants are voting later and are more critical of the shots. |

My thoughts on this is, it's the internet and it's anonymous. People out there get their kicks passing out bad scores. It's inevitable.
You could always take a break from the weekly challenges. Do some of the side challenges, and have fun. Ask for some critiques. There's plenty of help on this site. You just have to ask.
And I feel your pain. Mine has been at 5.8x all week until the last couple of days. Now it's at 5.6x. Yes, very annoying.

It sounds like a bunch of us started off strong and then dropped. I was hopeful of a 6+ on this for a while, but a high 5 is good too. Some great comments and a fave are the icing on this one. That, and I'm very pleased with it myself. I think this will become on of my personal faves.

I am familiar with this story.
From what I learned from DPC since before the great hurricane of 2005, I think I can safely say that:
For a shot like your Free Study to score even a low 5, it would have to have some kind of creativity behind it. That could be a crazy angle, adding a live creature or other subject to it, or even doing something with the colors.
Your Brown, I think, to most voters was just a picture of some pictures. Now you have to ask yourself...
....what can Brown do for you? Baaahaaaaa !

I knew that when I entered it but didn't care. That's why in a previous post about it I said:

Oh well I thought it was cool. Oh and make sure you tell rugman before he can pick on me he needs to start entering challenges. No armchair photographers allowed.
BTW I will be in 2-3 of the next challenges so far. Redemption?

Another thing I just noticed.
1st Place: 342 Views During Voting
2nd Place: 259
3rd Place: 243
4th Place: 262
5th Place: 269
Mine lol : 219
Ok so obviously first place grabbed more peoples attention in thumbnail view, JulietNN killed the rest of us in views (anyone remember where it was on the pages?)
But even by the rest, mine is 40-50 less views then the top ones (which would be if numbers are basically consistent 17-25 votes I didnt get because they never even saw my picture full size)

Can someone explain how a non square crop shot wins blue? I know it's a great shot, but it didn't meet the challenge. So I guess meeting the challenge is no longer required. |

I don't get it either. But it's not the first time a DNMC photo has won a ribbon. Nothing against the photo, it's fabulous, but obviously not a square crop. |

Correct. As one example.... a 1/2 second exposure won the Two second exposure challenge. As in the most recent Square Crop challenge, the caliber of the image carried it to blue ribbon territory. But, in contrast, voters didn't know elsapo's fine image was DNMC until after the challenge was over. In the square crop challenge, voters seemed to be oblivious to the several rectangles. I thought that was strange, because DNMC images are usually killed. It didn't take an exif tool display to determine the rectangles, as a few were as much as 100 pixels wider than tall. Some voters may have thought it was a center composition challenge. Some voters may have monitors with distorted aspect ratios. Or, they just could not differentiate a rectangle crop from a square crop.
At any rate, congratulations to the Blue Ribbon winner. It's a fine image. On to the next challenge. |

Just a thought - the aspect ratio of the winning photo was approximately 8x7. In other words she was DNMC by about 12.5%. If that 12.5% was deducted from her score, she would have come nowhere. |

As a footnote, there was a subsequent challenge, 30 Seconds or More. In that challenge, there were yellow flag special rules added saying, "Let's try this again.. not meeting the challenge is grounds for DQ; your EXIF data MUST show an exposure of 30 seconds or more."
For future challenges with a specific parameter requirement, there should be yellow flag extra rules like those mentioned above. There would be a clear educational benefit arising from learning how to produce a specific image parameter result, rather than just "eyeballing" the image.
