Especially since:

"Take a photograph where complete words -- not just individual letters -- play a creative role in your composition."

I spotted 2 or 3 images that I thought ended up on this challenge by accident.

Moving this to "Current Challenge" as "Members Discussion" is not visisble to non-members.

I have come across five entries so far that don't even contain letters, let alone words. What gives? Did these folks really not understand the challenge guidelines? Or are they just trying to bust chops? This goes beyond stretching the limits of a challenge and 'thinking outside the box' to use a belabored expression.

Here are some words for those entries:

Annoying, Irritating, Inconsiderate, Wasteful (as in 'of my time'), Clueless,

Sorry, I guess this should be moved to rant, now. I don't generally get to peeved about one or two like this but c'mon? Five? With 187 entries left to vote on?

I've noticed that too, and I've tried really hard to figure out what must be going on in the image to include it in a 'words' challenge.

Oh well.

Even though my submission is admittedly non-creative, at least it has words in it :)

I looked really hard a two of the five entries for hidden words but couldn't find anything. The other ones so obviously did not contain words or have anything to do with words, I didn't bother.

Yeah.. I tried really hard to find anything hidden, but just couldn't. Now I feel better, at least it wasn't just me!!

I have to totally agree with you on this one. Usually I try to give some leeway, allow for intrepretation, etc. and at least try and see the connection.

I am trying to envision the thought process ... "Hmmm, take a photo where complete words, not just letters, play a creative role in your composition.... aha! I got it. This shot of (whatever) that has absolutely no words in it, and has nothing to do with words is just perfect! I'm sure people will just love it. And that gives me a great idea for a similar shot of (whatever) for the next challenge, which I don't even know what the challenge will be yet, but it will be perfect."

I...just...don't...get it??? Someone, if possible, please enlighten me.

IMHO a good entry is clever but not obscure.

Also, straight-up pictures of signs, monuments, et cetera that simply contain words -- what gives? I'll give points for technical prowess on entries like this when appropriate, but they're getting no or low marks for creativity from me.

So my picture is composed and clever (4 comments telling me so), yet my score is low...what gives with that!?!$#@$#@

I get the pictures of hands (signlanguage I'm assuming) - but those darn flowers - Can we DQ them for not meeting the challenge?

There do seem to be alot of images that rely on *other people's* art to evoke "words." I am trying to avoid giving below a 3, since it hurts my voting average, but I have had to skip over 20 photos or leave comments asking why they didn't get creative.

I think this was a hard challenge for people who are used to going out and looking for a shot, rather than creating one.
07/14/2004 03:45:14 PM · #13
The pics that clearly didn't meet the challenge, i.e. no words in any language, got an automatic 1 from me with one exception - one photo was particularly well done so it got a 2.

who knows, it might not hurt.

how many photos in advertising did well without following
the rather strict (as I saw it) directive of
"Your job is to photograph a product..."

*shrug*

well, if you notice, alot of the photos for Words seem to be leftover advertising ideas. How is a random picture of a bike logo or other product an appropriate representation of "words playing a creative role in your composition?" Those aren't even strong ads.

digistoune - I agree completely with you, and I think the single great photo without a single word in it was my only 'does not meet challenge' with a 2 vote. I don't really care about my average vote given. That is for other people to think I'm 'cool' or not, not for me to vote fairly on the challenges. Mind you, I do have a 'respectable' average, but that's only because I eogtistically think I vote fairly!! :)

In this case, no words = does not qualify...sorry; you get a 1 (or a 2).

rgordon - you obvisouly haven't gotten to my shot, since it is completely devoid of creativity .... :)

My voting average is going to go way down. :( I can't help it. I didn't want to skip voting any just for the sake of average... I've commented on all my 1s, 10s, 9s, 8s, and 7s now...and a few of the others that really struck me as I went through... I've done 20% of the images so far. Maybe tomorrow I'll go for it again, but I think I'm all commented out for the day.

At a first glance, I thought the entries were as a whole, rather impressive, but with closer examination, I am a bit disappointed really.

And I by no means have a wonderful entry myself, but it does fit the challenge, which is more than I can say for some of the pictures I saw.

I took the challenge of 'Words' to mean one or more word, which is more than just individual letters. If the challenge was 'Word' then I guess some people would likely vote down more than one word. Perhaps for challenges like this they should be 'Word(s)' to include both one or more items.

What's with all the people who can't let the voting be completed without discussing how we should vote on certain photos?

Why does everybody feel the need to constantly "go off" about pictures which they perceive as not meeting the challenge?

Are the so angry at having their time "wasted" that they think they have to make sure to prejudice the rest of the voters into voting similarly low, as if the rest of us aren't perfectly capable of deciding for ourselves whether or not a photo meets the challenge, and assigning the appropriate "penalty" for that offense?

I really think people who think a photo doesn't meet the challenge should just vote their 1 or 2 and move on -- I'm not quite sure why this doesn't constitute "discussing a photo during the challenge" anyway, since at the very least a GROUP of photos are being identified and discussed.

I understand people needing to vent or express their opinion somtimes, but I'm finding this practice of posting "challenge reviews" during the voting is getting really depressing ....
07/14/2004 04:48:28 PM · #20
More depressing is the way my score drops. But let's not discuss that. I'll just go cheer myself up with some of the subjects of this week's challenge ;)

GeneralE, its because people like to talk about stuff that makes them feel passionate.....and since photography is sometimes about passion, you might have a few passionate people...

I read that, after going out and taking This photo :-)..

Just before uploading it I read the challenge again, and shot out and took a totally different photo closer to home.. I'd driven 10k's to the nearest cemetery to find a decent headstone, and found the RIP.. Ah well, should read the instructions first!

I like that part of it -- I'm just not feeling so good about this mode of expression. If I wasn't part of that group myself I wouldn't care or have mentioned it. :)

Also ... your username fits in so well with this week's challenge :)

I generally don't bother with discussions about how well the population of entries did on meeting the challenge because I allow a decent amount of leeway in interpreting the challenges.

However, in this case after voting on 141 images I counted 12 that have quite blatently ingnored the challenge guidelines by not containing any words or even letters. That is just plain irritating. Surely this is an oddity worth mentioning.

My feeling on this subject is that first it is not worth even the energy devoted to it.

VOTER BEWARE ! ! ! I suggest you follow the advise of voting as if the image were legal. The DPC team will catch it at one point and it will certainly not earn a ribbon.

There are many tricks that can be done to a camera lens so as to fool the viewer. Most neophites are must suspect because they use their cameras to record rather than to create. Many oustanding effects can be achieved under basic editing. I suggest you look at port after port. Get outside of yourself and see how others use the camera to create illusions and special effects.
