Not especially happy, but having finished voting I now know why my entry is tanking. Clearly I missed the fine print in the challenge info that stated entries had to be of birds, bugs or flowers. Don't get me wrong, there are some outstanding bird/bug/flower shots that I would be over the moon about had I been able to acheive them. However, it seems to me that by the time you get # VII of a particluar challenge topic it's just a case of seeing who can do the best job of recreating previous high scoring entries.

Looking at the previous Bokeh challenges, the overall scores have been failry low. Every single one of the winners had scores in the low 7's until the last one which was 7.3-ish. I think it is one of those challenges where different people interpret the meaning of the word differently. Some want to see tons of out of focus circles in the background, some want to see a smooth OOF background, some in between, and some neither.

Personally, I look at it this way...when you see a lens advertised for it’s bokehâ€Â¦it never says “Circles of confusion” it usually talks about the smoothness or creaminess of the Bokeh.
Although out of focus circles can be a part of it, they are definitely not the only part.

I agree that the circles of confusion do not have to be a part of it, but they can be so beautiful!

Folks! PLEASE STOP THE INSANITY!!! The little dots of light in the out of focus backgrounds of some images are NOT circles of confusion!!!!! The circle of confusion is an optics term and relates to optics and depth of field.

Ahhh...but they are considered Bokeh. :-)

From this Bokeh article (which has a photograph example in it also if you care to look):

"Bokeh is often most visible around small background highlights, such as specular reflections and light sources, which is why it is often associated with such areas.[1] However, bokeh is not limited to highlights; blur occurs in all out-of-focus regions of the image."

That should appease both crowds; background highlights AND out-of-focus regions of blur are BOTH mentioned.

As for "Circles of Confusion in Photography" - this link will satisfy anyone's taste that lean toward technical articles.

Point of light bokhe can be hard or soft edged, there is no right or wrong. You can like one more than another but to say that the edges have to be soft to be "good" bokeh is to impose a random aesthetic. The goal is to make a pleasing out of focus background. If the blur circle is a hard edged evenly illuminated disk and it is beautiful, then it is good bokeh.

The beauty of wiki is you're more than welcome to edit it if you can support your posting. Is there something in those articles that you can verify as invalid?

Try Harold Merklinger, who's prose can be dense, but he knows his stuff and signs his name.

I'm turned right off of photography right now. There's way too much "politics". One has to first guess as to what the meaning of the challenge is for themselves and then, go in and discuss that meaning ad nauseum in a thread for it all. Anything that isn't falling within the agreed upon "accepted range" gets a 1 to 4 score...even though it fits the challenge description. Think I'll use my camera as a planter now. :)

Better to be turned right off of photography CONTESTS..... Keep using your camera, shoot for yourself, and occasionally enter a challenge when you feel like getting a bit of feedback. The DNMC Police aside, most people here are pretty open minded, and not everyone here is cutthroat about getting a virtual ribbon :-) A few are, but most not. Good, useful, thoughtful comments are valued more highly than scores by most people.

I agree...I love a good comment it always makes me feel better about my crappy score. With that said I need some comments to go with my crappy score!

I got no time to leave a worthwhile comment, but I am happy to zoom by and drop a crappy score on your entry :D

okay dokie...no problem, please drop by and visit! I guess that is better than nothing at all.

Oh dear....I agree....I'd think it better if someone just dropped by as a visit and didn't score then LOL ;)

Bet I have the Brown sewn up, according to this thread. LOL

Ok, not turning my camera into a planter. Have a new use for it now!

Throwing at my screen when I look at my scores! And, not 1 comment to enjoy either. :(

I'm chuckling here right now, thinking back to something someone once said in another challenge score thread about putting their camera in their back pocket or holding at their hip and entering whatever they captured by snapping the shutter button randomly. I just might give that a try next. ;-P
