If I move the locations of the referenced files to the external drive, eventually Time Machine will not have backups of the photos, right? And then I will only have one copy, which is something I want to avoid. If I make copies of the files to the external drive, then if I edit them, how does Aperture keep track of versions? I will be using two different computers and want to be able to access the files using two different versions of Aperture.

I don't even know enough to ask some pertinent questions as to how I should do this, and what would my workflow be?

Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

With Aperture you can have the library on an external drive as well as the images. If you intend to use more than one computer why not put the library on an external drive importing all the images into Aperture and use Aperture's vault as backup.

That sounds feasible. But let me ask you this: what happens if I stop using Aperture and want to access the images with some other software program, what then? I've been around long enough to know that I might not want to tie myself to Aperture forever. Would I be able to export all the files from Aperture then?

Easy, you have all the masters somewhere already or re-export them if you want. Then export the versions ready for import to your next favourite program.

Thanks for the ideas! I am pretty thick about this but I think I understand. I guess I'll go read the Aperture Manual about this section with your explanation. I may be back to ask more questions.

So this thread has been dormant a while! I am amazed though that it's last May since the last post.

I was just watching a couple of video tutorials on ApertureExpert.com and came across a new add on for Aperture that is for sale on this site. It may very well appeal to those of you who are gear heads/love stats. It's called Aperture Inspector and it analyses the metadata of all the images in your Aperture library to give you cool charts about what the most commonly used focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc as well as lens and camera data. A mine of useful (useless?) info, but I'm sure a few folk would enjoy it.

//www.apertureexpert.com/inspector

The guy who runs Aperture Expert has also set up an "all things Apple" site, called www.tinymactips.com It's a very new site so not much content right now, but looks like it maybe a good place to pick up some tips and hints.

Just thought I'd share here, since anyone reading this forum, is obviously a mac user!

Thanks for this (and for keeping the thread alive).

I may check it out: sounds like a way to geek out over data and plots :-)

Anyone done the 3.3 update yet? Seems some things have changed. I'm travelling for work so not got access to aperture right now. Would be interested to see what the verdict is.

Yes, I've upgraded... Aperture 3.3 works fine for me. It required an upgrade for the library, but it was fast. I'm on Lion Mac 10.7.4.

...Minor terminology changes, including "Original" instead of "Master" and "Info" instead of "Metadata".

Ordered my Macbook Retina last week. It came with $100 gift card so I purchased the new aperture. I've been using it for a few days and can say it is a pretty sharp editor. Different than PS as far as full blown graphic editing goes. However, Aperture is marketed as a photo editing tool. I must say I really like the Mac integration. The "sharing" feature that allows you to post to Facebook, Flickr etc...without leaving the program is really nice. I can edit some shots and zap them up with the click of the mouse....very nice.

I'll let you know how it looks on the Retina display in about a week or so....

Welcome to Aperture Ken. I've been using it since version 1 and can agree, it's a very nice tool, especially the way it integrates with the rest of the mac stuff.

The resource I have listed below, www.apertureexpert.com has many wonderful tips and hints should you ever get stuck with something.

ETA, I do nearly all my editing in Aperture (together with the Nik suite of plugins) and only really round trip to Photoshop if I want to play with some textures and overlays.

Awesome! I've been using aperture for a couple years and love it. I had some weird colors pace issues not got it resolved. It integrates real nice with osx and is pretty easy to use. I love the smart albums.

Let me know how the retina MacBook pro is, still trying to sell my air first though, probably not the best selling time I guess.

My Old pro is already sold as soon as retina arrives...many requests for it here locally. It will help pay for retina. The remainder is a big chunk of my big 50 birthday in July.

I've had my Retina Pro for almost a week now. Mostly used for a mix of web surfing, photo editing, and Diablo 3. For those interested, Diablo 3 plays very smoothly :)

Photo editing is very nice. Crisp details and so much screen real estate to work with if you change the scaling. But for me, the CPU power is huge. with the 4 core i7, my Topaz and Nik plugins run much faster, reducing the overall time of my editing significantly. Also, the display's colors seem very good. It uses IPS technology for the display, and it shows when I see gradients as I don't notice any color banding like I did with my old MacBook Pro.

The size is quite nice as well. Much smaller than my old MacBook Pro, which meant it was much easier to carry around when I took a short trip on the weekend. I could much more easily fit this in my photo backpack if needed.

I went from a 2009 MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz), in which I had upped the RAM to 8GB and put in an SSD drive. That machine was definitely limited by the CPU, as I notice the Retina Pro's drive accesses are about the same, and I have yet to fill the 16GB of RAM.

I'm very happy :)

Ok...let's get this out of the way first...

HOW DID YOU GET THIS MACHINE A WEEK AGO? I ordered 12 hours after announcement and I have at LEAST another week to go!

Mine will be used for music (Logic Pro) and video (Final Cut X) composition and editing...a hobby of mine. That will be what the 16GB memory and the SSD will handle ! Of course it will be used to edit photos too.

Sounds like it's living up to it's potential.

Keep me up on any positives or negatives as they come around.

Thanks

Yeah, haven't much local interest here honestly, so just sitting and waiting twiddling my thumbs until I get a call on it. Maybe if I keep bumping the price down I might get a bite? Haven't had this much trouble selling an Apple product before.
