Hi, I'm new to the site. I had browsed it a few years ago, but never really got into it because I didn't have my own camera. Last year, I got a little P&S as a graduation present, and while it isn't brilliant, it's enough to have fun with. 90% of my photos are horses or horse-related things. I'm living off of canned goods right now, but will likely become a full-member this Summer, if just to remind myself of the lingo. As of right now, I don't even trust myself to comment on photos, because I forgot what everything is called. :( I remember words, but not meanings. Hot shoe/foot? Bokeh? What does HDR stand for again? It's pathetic what I've forgotten since I've stopped taking pictures. :(

My big question is, how do I vote for the contests? I see a bar that fades from white to black with various shades of gray. Is that the voting thing? What's a 1 and what's a 10?

Also, is it okay to post a link to my photobucket? :( I read the rules when I signed up, but now I can't remember them, or find them. (Where are they?)

We vote from one to ten, ten being excellent and one being crap, the bar with the various shades of gray is so that you know if your screen is calibrated, hope that helps.

One means you absolutely hate it, ten means you absolutely love it. Work the scale in between however you like. There's no right or wrong way to vote provided you're not cheating.

The black-to-white target is for monitor calibration and has nothing to do with voting.

Comments need not be technical. How does the image make you feel? What do you like or dislike about it? It's all very subjective.

Just have fun. No pressure.

Because you'll get 25 different opinions....Lol. Vote what you like that comes closest to meeting the Challenge description is the only thing I could say. Welcome Back.

I don't see the numbers anywhere. The 1-10 numbers. Do you have to comment before the numbers come up?

Are you trying to vote on the sunday challenge (tilt) or the tuesday challenges (warm vs cool)

You need to be a paying member to vote on the sunday challenges, but any registered user can vote on the tuesday challenges. :D

welcome back!! Never be afraid to comment. Regardless of whether you are a novice or an expert, you still have a valid opinion. Everyone has different reactions to photos, and that's what's important. :D

As a Registered User you can only vote on the two Open Challenges, although you can comment on pictures in all of the challenges. Currently, only those with a paid membership can vote in the challenges restricted to paid Members.

A paid membership also allows you to store pictures here, sell prints, and enter many more challenges. You can try it out for a month for $5, or sign up for a year for $25.

I had just figured that out before you two above me posted. :) I was trying to vote in Tilted Horizon II, and when I switched to Warm Colors II, the option changed from "Comment" to "Vote".

Right now, I'm living off spaghettios so that my horses can eat like kings (stupid, I know) but I'm definitely going to sign up for a year with all the bells and whistles once my work hours pick up this Summer. A portfolio is totally necessary for me. :)

Thanks so much for all of the help, everyone. :) I really appreciate it.

(ETA: I didn't see that two people had posted after me.)

Voting is kind of a personal thing. I don't appreciate anyone telling me how to vote. I think threads suggesting people should vote a certain way come close to violating this sites policies. So the only advice I'd give you is vote for what you like.

When I meant, "How to vote", I was talking about literally, how to vote. Like, where are the numbers to click? Lol. I didn't mean "is this worth a 10?" I was in a Member challenge when I should have been in an Open challenge. :) Sorry, should have clarified.
