I entered an image in the "Warm Colors" challenge with colors that are predominantly not warm colors. It would have fitted in the "Cool Colors" challenge even worse as the colors are not what I would describe as very cool either. A bit of a shoehorn really as far as warm or cool colors go. Anyway I knew this when I entered but I wanted to have this image in my portfolio as a challenge entry so i entered. What I observe though from this through the 6 comments I have received so far is that the givers of the comments are decidedly one dimensional in their commenting. 5 of the comments say exactly the same thing namely that the entry hasn't got warm colors. Fair enough, that's true and ok but hey come on! if you are going to comment then look a bit further and see a bit more of the image then just whether it fits the challenge theme or not. Do you enjoy the view?, the composition? the angle? the content? the detail? A small remark such as lovely view or something would be appreciated and makes the photographer feel that his/her effort in making the shot is at least appreciated even though the image fails to meet the challenge description in the main description point. Or are we here only to judge an image on the rules without absorbing anything else the image has to offer? I myself have often commented on an image that does not meet the challenge but still appeals to my other senses by pointing out why imo it does not fit the challenge but I then often also add something that I do like like about the image.
Anyway...just my penny's worth
Cheers
Fred

I think given all the bashing voters get for not commenting on why they voted low, this may be described as progress!

I agree with you that it would be nice to get comments on how a shot makes someone feel, or what they think of it, but in general, since this is a competition site and people are judging photos on their merit relative to the challenge, the comments themselves will predominately focused on that.

The side challenges are a lot better for getting comments about the the shot rather than the technique, but I find in side challenges, people don't tend to criticise at all, so you never get feedback on why they don't like it.

Oddly, people assume that reds are warm and blues are cold... however you only have to look at the Dulux paint mixing system colour cards to see that you can get warm blues and cool reds. I think people are quite one dimensional in their consideration of whether a colour is warm or cold.

I used to have debates with my wife over whether a blue in our bathroom was warm or cold... my stance was that it was cold. It took a while for her to convince me, but eventually she did and I now agree that it is a warm blue.

Quite True. Actually when I entered my image I was of the opinion that the blues and greens in my image were of the warm variety as per the Dulux paint mixing cards you mention. I knew though by looking at the previous challenge that the voters would be looking for oranges, reds and yellows and that therefore most would not consider my image to be composed of warm colors.

.... just as a warm Black&White or warm duo/quad tone. Open minded multi dimensional voters, out of the box photographers, brave people on DPC or any other peer group voting site. Yet, in both challenges there are those images that one does not even have to think about, they just stand out.

Sure, obviously, but I wasn't talking about those. If one of those had been mine this post would not have been made. :)
