I'm going to buy a set of continuous lights. After a few challenges and my lighting was not working out the way I want I decided it is time. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I'm looking at Impact or Smith and Vector. I don't want to spend a lot but not the cheapest out there. I want something moderately priced. |

Any particular reason you want continuous and not strobe? |

I want to experiment with hot lights. Look at my photo of the chips, the bulbs were too weak to light up my background. The background should have been whiter. After talking with a friend it was suggested that I invest in some continuous lighting. |

Well, strobes will do the same thing, and aren't nearly as hot (temperature-wise). If you get them with modeling lights, you'd be able to focus easier |

There is quiet a bit going on with fluorescent, but the really good stuff if pretty expensive. I think westcott has some very reasonably priced options that are worth looking at. |

For reasonably priced continuous lights, take a look at JTL. //www.jtl-lighting.com/
I have a set and they work great. You have to be very careful if moving them around. The bulbs get really hot and if they come loose, they burn through linoleum floors. |

While Im trying to figure out my ideal strobist kit, I have been using clamp lamps and halogen work lights and flash lights on long exposures. It looks crude as hell in setup pictures, but Ive been really agressive in lighting technique with the cheapy kit and it's been making some interesting results. Ive even started to use a little frame to hold paper towels in front of the halogen if I want to soften the light. aluminum snoods to keylight one small area, lighting through a plastic file folder to fake a blue sky background.
I don't know why I get a perverse pleasure out of lighting with the cheapest possible tools, but its a fun challenge and they cost about one tenth the price per watt of the next cheapest option. Some day Ill have to get serious and plunk down for Pocket Wizards and Einsteins, but in the mean time, this can be fun. |

One thing that I really want to try right now is fluorescent source in conjunction with one of the parabolic reflectors from 'alien' 'bees'. I have a feeling that this could be a very affective combination. I need to cobble together a fixture that will keep the bulb at the focal point of the reflector. |

I bought a set of three continuous fluorescent lights from amazon for about $250 and I think they work great. Not professional quality obviously but much better than nothing. They are currently unavailable, but there are other products that are basically the same. Here are some that are available amazon photography lights

I recently shot some video using two 600w Chimeras in softboxes. Used them for 4 hours straight and it really didn't generate much heat on the subjects. Of course the units themselves get very hot and you have to use gloves to mess with them, but otherwise it was like shooting with regular strobes. Nothing at all like shooting outside with the Texas sun blaring down on you in the summer. Now that's hot! |
