I've wanted to take a photography class for a while but it never seems to fit into my irregular schedule. I don't want a two hour course but a series of classes over a period of time, with an actual person assessing my progress. In the last year since I purchased my first SLR, I've been obsessed with books, blogs, videos, magazines & everything else I can get my hands on. I have participated in this site on and off over the last few years and really enjoy the interaction. I even started a local photography group that meets once a month to take pictures locally (now up to 319 members!) so I can meet (and learn from) other photographers.

So now I want a little "formal" training & I don't mind paying for it if it' worth it. It's all for fun... I'm not a professional and never will be (ok, maybe when I retire from my "real" job in 20-25 years). Have any of you had experience with any of them? I've seen a few that look interesting: The Perfect Picture School of Photography, NYIP, and a few others that I can't locate right now.

I used to work with a gal that was enrolled with NYIP. She was taking courses through the mail. She showed me a few of the books from time to time and from what I saw everything seemed to be technically sound. The material didn't seem overly exciting, and I have never felt the need or desire to enroll myself, but part of that probably has to do with how bad I am at any sort of distance learning. There's a slight chance I'm a bit of a procrastinator... =]

I know that's not a lot of help, but that's what I know about NYIP... =]

A couple of years back, I did NYIP for the Hell of it. Got to say the course is pretty good. It covers everything from basic exposure and composition to what I'd say is intermediate lighting. Nothing terribly advanced about the course, but it gives a good base of fundamentals.

A few years ago, I took a class through BetterPhoto. I enjoyed it and learned quite a bit.

I'd suggest looking there as well.

I took a class at PPSOP and to be honest I was a little disappointed. It was an Understanding Exposure class. There was more time spent talking about what should be taken out of the photo. All the video's that were given in that course are free at Youtube.com - put in PPSOP and they all come up. I should have taken that money and put it towards an new lens. It was definitely money not worth spent!

Really? This is the one I was considering. :(

Its possible you would have a different experience. But I absolutely would not do it again! Not there anyway.

I've seen some of those... they ARE really good. I've watched a ton of online tutorials (including a bunch at Kelbytraining)... I subscribe to a bunch of Youtube channels (including Topaz and Nik's which I really enjoy).

I was looking for something a little more structured and ongoing for an extended time. Something with a little feedback and assistance if needed. I really enjoy it here... but honestly if I'm looking for feedback, entering a challenge is generally not the way to get it (unless the shot is really great or really stinks).

I have done a couple of classes with The Compelling Image. This was about 2 yrs ago. Looks like they have grown a bit since that time. I was the only person enrolled on one of the classes I did and so had one on one tuition and extremely good critique on the assignments. I would not hesitate to do another one. However, it depends what you are looking for, the ones I did were not for beginners (but you are not a beginner, right?) I did the class Developing a Photographer's Eye and finding your Photographic Style. They have developed the catalogue of classes since I was last doing a class.

I have taken quite a few courses at betterphoto.com and liked them. There are 4 weeks and 8 weeks courses ranging from novoice to serious enthusiast. They email lesson every week that have assignments at the end. You upload the phtoos and instructor will critique on the photo. I took 4 courses and I liked all of them.

Try Linda.com, I especially like the teaching of Chris Orwig from Brooks Institute on that site. It's a monthly subscription for unlimited use of their whole site that can be droped at any time ($35 for basic I think). They have many choices of subjects. I think they offer a free "try it" month if I remember correctly. Anyway real professional, I often go back to videos I have bookmarked for review.

Seconded. Definitely recommended. I love that site (which is actually lynda.com)! The stuff they have on there is really great. They have SO much on there. They have everything from basic topics to very advances, very specific stuff. (I've taken classes from Chris Orwig at Brooks and he's as incredible online as he is in a real classroom.)
