| Camera prices seem to be on the rise, at least for Canon. I'm sure it has to do with production in Japan. But Dont they have plants in other countries? |

I thought Canon was American... but just looked and see it's Japanese.

Most Canon cameras and lenses are made in Japan...especially the mid range and high end models. Both Canon and Nikon had to shut down plants in Japan after the earth quake and tsunami because of damage to parts of the plant and injuries to employees. On top of that there has been a shortage of supplies due to radiation testing etc. products coming out of Japan have been slowed.
I've posted it other threads, but it's the main reason why I got my 7D right after this tragedy occurred. I grabbed on of the last 7D's already in stock at Adorama at $200 dollars below MSRP. The next day they were out of stock. I sensed this would happen and jumped before it was too late.
Canon bodies and lenses have all gone up for the most part. For instance...the 50mm 1.4 which is the next step up for those with the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 II) has gone from $325.00 to over $500 dollars in most places. The nifty fifty itself has also gone up from the normal bargain price of $99.00 dollars to over $125 in some places. Other lens prices I follow have also jumped substantially.

Just looked at both boxes for my 7D and XSi. Both cameras were made in Japan, the charger for the XSi was made in China (not sure about the 7D charger), and my battery grips (both Canon...not third party) were made in Taiwan.
