Nikon does a little "dirty trick" with their warranty, saying that you must return the card within 10 days to extend the warranty from 1 year to 5 years.

Of course, if you return the warranty within 10 days, you lose your ability to return the lens if it's defective.

I am now ready to finally register my lenses, I ordered last month...after returning one for exchange as defective.

I was wondering what you guys do about this, and if anyone has been turned down by Nikon for extended warranty service because their cards came in "too late". (I could fudge the purchase date, but that's silly.)

If i could remember the source I can quote a Nikon rep as saying that as long as its been filed its good. There is no 10 days.

EDIT - A little googling and you find all sorts of cases where it didnt matter one way or the other.

We've had no problems getting repairs under the 5 year warranty, with just a copy of the sales receipt. Nikon wants you to register your lenses & other gear. But, if you don't, they will still take care of their legitimate customers who have purchased through a Nikon USA authorized dealer. The receipt is necessary - but that seems to be all that is needed!

Can't you just register online as with Canon?

The problem is that product warranties arregulated on by states as well as the Federal gov't, so what holds true in one state may not be so in another. Michigan, for example excludes having to return a warranty card to receive a warranty. The only thing necessary is a proof of purchase.

To my knowledge this is not an problem. I always register online within days and have had repairs done with no warrantee issues.

Even in the "5 year" timeframe? (meaning they supposedly don't give you the 4 year extension unless you send that card in right away).

I went ahead and registered online, but I'm tempted to send in the 4 year extended cards (late) anyway.
