do you change or edit your challenge entry before the deadline? do you submit early and change if you get something better, or just before deadline to avoid the temptation to change it? i am struggling with this... i keep looking at 5 photos and one day i like photo a better, the next photo b, and so on.

Maybe you can print all five on a sheet of paper and toss a dart at it ... ;-)
I am a chronic procrastinator, so I'm usually submitting near the deadline (except for the past couple of weeks) and don't have the luxury of a choice of images. But usually once I have an entry in, I try to leave it alone and move on to something else. |

I usually enter the last day, I used to enter earlier but I would come back too many times with a little tweak here and there. I try not to enter too last minute though. Often when I upload to DPC I notice things I didn't notice before and I like to have time to go back and fix them.
BTW: if you are have 2-5 photo's you like equally as well sometimes its good to have a couple other people look at them and help you decide which is the best fit for the challenge. Some people are against this, but I find it extremely helpful. |

If I submit early, I will frequently go back and tweak it after I have a chance to see it on several different monitors and have had some time to notice things. Often they are minor things that only bother me. Other times it is something major like realizing it needs stronger contrast or some artifacts show up on a different monitor.

90% of the time. 10%, I get a good shot, just enter it and leave it... or something very bad, that I know I can't reproduce better, and enter that one and leave it.
...but, what you're doing is totally normal :) |

Such blunt but well intentioned feedback is one of the strongest learning experiences to be had on DPC, in my opinion. As long as the people giving the feedback can either vote objectively or skip voting on those images they've given feedback on. Myself, I have a blanket policy of skipping the vote for any entries I've given feedback on.

I'm usually super definitive about my entries. I think I may have changed it once after submission. I think it's more a question of personality leanings though. Once I make up my mind, I make up my mind. I do, however, think it's good to get to the point where you are happy with your decisions and stop second guessing yourself so much. There will always be what ifs, but be happy with the photo you submit and it becomes much easier. Or separate yourself from the score, it will have the same vindicating effect.
Really though, if you're looking to improve your scores (remember to consider this separately from inherent quality of photos), I would suggest you select whatever photo you think is best, and think about where you think it will score and where you think the photo could be improved. See how this meshes with voters and comments. If you're wrong, you can ask for additional feedback after the challenge, or perhaps you may already know why it wasn't as well received from the comments you received. Be objective though- every time you look at one of your photos, pretend you were not there at its capture and have no clue of the backstory. Including one's self within the photo's creation taints many photographer's judgement of quality.
Certainly, if you submit a photo early and find you have shot something better, replace it, but I normally wait until the end to judge all works together, before I have spent any time on them. RAW Vs. RAW before I had anything further vested in my photos. It's easy to get tricked into the superiority of a shot because you spent soooooooooooo much time getting/editing/creating it. |

On my recent Free Study entry, I went through over 20 different iterations of the image with different processing etc.
Depending on how much I like the image, I tend to put in more and more effort. Sometimes I think I'm a little obsessed at times ;) |

Varies from challenge to challenge. Occasionally, I will shoot something that turns out so close to what I envision, that there is no guesswork. Most of the time, I will submit/unsubmit about 3-4 times, changing edits, changing images. For the FS, this can happen numerous times as I shoot stuff during the month, which is arguably better than what I've already shot. I find this to be the most challenging part of the, um, challenges... |

You could try submitting to a few challenges limiting yourself to the Minimal or Basic rule sets and check out your hypothesis ... almost all of my entries qualify under the Basic rule set, even if the challenge allows Advanced ... |
