Well finally the day came last Friday when the 2010-2011 Central Highlands Floods 'With a little help' Book was launched.
After receiving 9000 images and over 50 stories the book came together with over 500 images in it. 4000 books and 1000 DVD's were printed and are now for sale. Our aim is to crack the $100,000 mark to help locals get back on their feet. There are still many homeless and I personally know of young families living in tents even through the constant rain we are experiencing. Their small children still go to school and they continue their daily lives, but there are no houses available yet. The launch was run in conjunction with an exhibition of over 100 of the images from the book as well as an auction and a silent auction. Over 300 people came to the event and the night was covered by two TV stations that drove nearly 300kms to cover the event. Even the tv crews stayed for a few hours each as they covered stories from the book.
I thought I would show you all what has been going on in the last 2 months and have now uploaded the two news reports to Youtube. The cameras make me look old but I can't do anything about that....grrrr!!!! Leading up to the launch I was inundated with media interviews covering, radio, newspaper and television and have included one of the articles below. The news reports covers three stories, one of which is about a lovely lady whose husband of 51 years died and his funeral was organised but the floods came in. The funeral was postponed but the waters continue to rise. The helicopter companies then came forward and flew all the guests to the location where they were met by the priest who then drove them all to the church. Unfortunately her husband (the guest of honour) was stranded over 200kms away and had to turn back, therefore not making his own funeral. The funeral went ahead and a few weeks later a memorial service was arranged where over 600 people attended. This goes to show the reality of how floods can effect peoples lives and how people come together to help one another.

So what I am looking for in all there is when and where will it be available for us to purchase online? Just curious I didnt bother to watch the news reports just read and reread the post. Ill be honest I am too broke to jump on it this second but even if the initial run sells out locally no reason not to have the following runs available online. I apologize if something was discussed previously that's not here.
Congratulations on completing your project. |

LOL....that night was a very big step for me. Up until my accident I had done quite a bit of public speaking including a lot of live on air radio talks. Because of my speech problems from the accident (stuttering and memory issues with words) I thought that was the end of those days. I did a few live on air interviews with this book leading up to the launch and I was a little shaky but I handled it. But the big test was the speech on the night. Speaking in front of a crowd is very different to speaking to a microphone in a closed room. Prior to the accident my speeches were all formed in my head without the use of speech notes. But leading up to the launch I kept forgetting my speech, so I wrote some speech notes to help me on the night. Unfortunately when I got there the notes were missing and I had to wing the speech. I got up to the microphone and started fine but my body started trembling, to the point I knew it was very obvious to the audience. My voice and memory were scattered but I got the words out...I finished the speech and later, when I found my notes, saw that I had only missed a couple of things. I was very proud that I did it. I didn't think I could...but I was determined to try. People...no matter your inabilities or fears...you should try and you may surprise yourself and do it. It may not be perfect, but nobody can take away your success in achieving a personal goal.

Interesting lady, this Judi. Back in August 2010, she had a really serious riding accident. Barely getting over that, the floods came for the 2nd time in just four years and messed up her house and horses.
So, what does she do?
Writes and photographs a book recording the floods, called With a Little Help with all proceeds going to help her town.
Just another of the nice people who make up DPC.

Judi, I watched the channel 7 news clip and you look and sound great. I love that the book is a compilation and not the work of a single artist. You can be proud of your contribution. Well done! |

Aww thanks guys. There are over 70 different photographers in the book with stories from over 40 people. Over 500 images are in the book which covers the entire shire (about 12 towns). Photos came from all sorts of cameras and even mobile phones. In fact my favourite image was shown on one of the news reports and is of 5 horses swimming in very deep water trying to get to the farm in the distance. That image was taken on a mobile phone by a helicopter pilot as he tried to herd them to safety. That image printed out beautifully at 8"x15".

Judi, I thought the interviews were great! I can only the imagine the emotional state of the audience when you were speaking at the project launch. If you trembled, so did all there - remembering and feeling again the pain and the overwhelming awe of Mother Nature... and the triumph of survival to be there to hear your words and see the powerful images you presented.
You are truly a remarkable representative of a remarkable group of people. |
