"Reduce the world to a palette of grays, and focus on light, shade, line, texture and form."
Isn't this "Edward Weston II" |

Not really, since in this challenge you can submit more than nudes and vegetables.
Apparently this hasn't been done since 2006
Blac & White III
Black & White II
Black & White
Of course, there have been many many other, more specific, black and white challenges over the years |

I'm excited my trial of SEP2 is up in a week but my hard copy is ordered and in the mail. Can't wait for this one. Now to just think of an idea. |

Nice thing is you can submit sequential frames to Edward Weston, Black & White IV, Fine Arts: Exhibit 2.
I expect the top ten in all 3 to be desaturated. |

This is the first thing I thought as well - similar and overlapping challenges!

After several weeks of hohum challenges, we're going to be hit with Weston, Free Study, Black and White and Fine Art back-to-back-to-back-to-back. |

I really enjoy the challenges that are more general in nature. Maybe it is because of my somewhat Noob Status, but a "simple" challenge such as B&W is really what I appreciate. I can't help but notice that when the challenges get a little complex, odd, or over the top, submissions plummet. For instance, the whole Lucky 13 challenge was a Free Studyish type Advanced Weekly with under a 100 submissions.
I think it is important that DPC has fun and odd challenges on occasion, but participation spikes when the topic is broad. I (and keep in mind I know that my opinion may not be the dominant one here) would rather see broad topics and tons of submissions than narrow ones with fewer.
Note* I am certain that this is where Bear Music or Robert E show me a graph that proves I am statistically wrong. I am willing to take the risk. : )

Sigh....
There is more to Edward Weston than the two categories you mention.
Check out this Edward Weston website; there are SIX categories of photography listed.
So...you have more choices for that other challenge than nude and veggies, and if you really like the various styles of Edward you can find some motivation for maybe something else in B&W. :-) |

Not me! I don't do graphs... I tend to agree with you, also. I think we need to be running more of these "less specific" challenges, technique-oriented or process-oriented challenges. Of course, that's my particular bias, I'm just one voice here.

That's so true. Weston was so versatile and interested in so much. But please don't harshly punish nudes, or vegetables (or even nude vegetables), simply because they are those subjects. Form is at the heart of that kind of imagery, and the intricacies of the human form, the idiosyncrasies of everything organic, is well-suited to such abstracted exploration. |

Blasphemy. This is DP Challenge where NUDES are immediately cast into the fires of downvoting because of subject matter. LOL. It is okay to show some side-boob. . .but dare thee not show anything else. LOL. Anything sexually related automatically becomes fodder for the masses here. A friend of mine posted a picture of an artificial "member" used for stimulation during a battery challenge and you would have thought he shot Kennedy by the time the voting was done. This is one area I think we could improve on. It is about the art, not the subject matter--in most cases. |

I know you're being tongue-in-cheek, but nudity is not by itself sexual. |

Agreed. It does not have to be.
