I had the foresight and predicted this would happen immediately after I heard the terrible news of the devastation. For the last few months I was starting to get a little nervous about the continued availability of the 7D in large numbers since the big online retailers such as B&H and Adorama were seemingly "out of stock" more times than not.
THEN...this terrible tragedy of nature accorded in Japan and after trying to absorb the unthinkable magnitude of loss of life and property I started to envision the economic impact both in Japan and worldwide. I have wanted the Canon 7D for so long that I nearly panicked over the thought of never getting one or having to pay a much higher price. It was then that I decided that I would no longer wait, and literally got the last one that was already in this country from Adorama shipped overnight to me. They have both been out of the "body only" since I got mine, and the list price jumped back up $200.00 dollars overnight. It's been quite awhile since either of those sites have sold it at the MSRP.
When I told my family why I was getting it now instead of waiting I explained that there will be part shortages, effected areas due to radiation, companies or warehouses that might not be there any longer, prices increases due to all the above, plus added safety checks on products coming out of Japan and into the United States etc. they basically laughed and thought I was nuts and just looking for a reason to buy it. LOL. My brother actually said to me.."Yes, Dave...like they are really going to shut down plants or run out of camera parts", and he laughed. I said...we'll see. Well, obviously I was right as many production lines have been shut down across many industries.
Any way...that's my story and a little forethought payed off. For anyone curious as to why I didn't just wait until a 7D MK II was released...well, a bunch of reasons. 1) I've been ready for an upgrade for a long time 2) The Canon 7D is a great camera that normally gets a 5 star or at least a 4.5 star rating by thousands of users across the board which is rare for any camera 3) Newer is NOT always better, and I didn't want to go through the whole process again of reading reviews, waiting for bugs to be discovered and fixed etc.
