The challenge details say "Take a photograph which contains exactly thirteen of the main subject."

It's advanced editing, which means entries are expected to be fake photographs fabricated out of bits and pieces of actual photographs. Sounds easy...

But the rules say that "You may combine up to ten captures of the same basic scene. The intent of allowing multiple captures is to enable such techniques as high dynamic range (HDR), noise reduction, increased DOF, etc., but not to permit a subject from one scene to be inserted into a different scene, nor is it intended to allow a subject to appear in multiple places within a scene."

So I'm limited to ten images when I need 13, with the caveat that the subject isn't allowed to appear more than once, so it still doesn't matter that I don't get enough images because I'm not allowed to use multiple images to acquire my subject.

Doable with either 12 mirrors, or not at all. The closest I could otherwise get would be to have 13 different subjects in one picture; but the challenge details seem clear that there should only be one subject.

no...

Just get thirteen of something and take a picture. Thirteen flowers, thirteen pens, etc. You can't combine multiple photos if the photos are different. It's only for HDR type purposes.

uh oh. seems like we need a langdonictionary.

Wow...

1. In advanced editing we can't fabricate from bits and pieces, that's expert editing.

2. The "10 captures" bit only applies to HDR and focal/stack-type editing, where nothing changes between the exposures but the over/under aspect of it or the focal point, the scene itself must be identical from frame to frame.

3. The challenge isn't asking for what you seem to think it is... Think in terms of 13 marbles; they don't have to be identical marbles. 13 gravestones in a cemetery. 13 children in the park. 13 geese in a V formation. 13 boats beating to windward.

You get the idea now, right...?

Why does there seem to be so much animosity toward advanced and expert editing? Calling them "fake photographs" diminishes the work done by some really talented photographers IMHO. I see that a lot on this site.

Is it an old school versus new school thing?

Don't forget about the "Lucky" part. I believe this to mean they MUST be rabbits feet, horseshoes, three leaf clovers, etc. I got my DNMC rubber stamp at the ready.

Three leaf clovers?

Yeah, ok, FOUR LEAF CLOVERS. I see how this is - I am getting DNMC'd in my own "I'm gonna DNMC you" post! :P

I think OP was under the misapprehension that the challenge was running under expert rules and that the description required the same object cloned to an iteration of 13. Which essentially would have been a "fake photograph", yeah :-)

Probably. I only recently found out it's "Rabbits Foot" and not the Rat's Foot I've had on my keychain for ten years.

Sure is. There is a fair amount of push back against "Digital Art" of the type seen at Deviant. While sites like 1x make no distinction, there is a strong desire by some to keep a truer more documentary approach on this site. So only in "expert editing" are you allowed to remove "major" elements, or add images from different images (except the HDR exemption, up to ten frames of the same scene, no having elements move). it limits the possibilities, but the feeling is there are many other sites if you wish to explore that area of digital photography, while there are very few that take the more classical approach putting an emphasis on in camera work over editing skills.

Advanced is great and doesn't get a bad rap.

Expert is great and might get a rap because it blurs photography and artwork. It's still cool because you can combine images, but it's a step away from photography. That's all.

I have 4 rabbits with 16 feet amongst them. The tricky part will be getting them to stand still next to each other while 3 of them hold one foot each out of camera range ... or I could try to train one of them to stand on one foot and keep the other 3 feet out of camera range .. or one to keep one foot out of range and one to do a handstand ... this is sounding more and more challenging the more I think about it! Art, you are en evil genius.

Jamie, Nicky, Pookie and Violet said "NO." Rather emphatically.

That's why you should never give them names. ;-)

Many years too late for that!

We once had a cow named "Meat" so the kids wouldn't get confused what his eventual fate was. He was sweet, but the barbecue sauce made him even sweeter.

My idea does not include rabbit feet...horshoes...is that wrong. My photo plan does consist of 13. I don't want to be cremated in voting because I did not interpret correctly.

Fear not. I was being facetious. I don't think (m)any voters will interpret the "Lucky" part.
