*wiping sweat from brow* Whew! That was a nerve-wracking 48 hours but I am happy to report that the lens hood unstuck now, thanks to my good friend Dave, who used a chock of wood (with the ends rounded off), and a mean-looking hammer. The lens was laid down on a thick layer of padding and I held the lens body while he carefully gave it three good whacks. It loosened up the hood first, but it was still crooked.

Another light bash or two this time with the chock of wood against the end that was still sticking out, and eh wala, it was straight again. And yes I did have my gear along so mounted up the lens and shot to ensure the lens still worked. I can tell you, I was having kittens with each whack of that hammer! That's why I decided to ask Dave for his help, he used to be into photography, and he's a great handyman :-)

Thanks everyone for all your advice, greatly appreciated!

the answer is always going to be "get the hammer"

Awwww, I was really hoping to hear that you'd used Liquid Nitrogen... Darn.

(congrats)
