If you're local...sorry for the short notice...

Please join us on March 20 at a reception to meet the artist and celebrate the opening of an exhibition of nature photographs by Neil R. Shapiro in the main lobby of the Massry Residence in Albany. The opening will begin at 2:00 P.M. followed by refreshments and a violin concert by the Leonata Duo.

I have 13 of my "lesser known" works (ha ha) hanging there. Mainly because my usual stuff is hanging at Professor Javas, and I am just taking that one down today. (I have another Starbucks going up April 1st.)

I'll have some pictures of the display and opening here later for those who are not local.

I think my first show was last July...so far my experience in terms of generating sales has been less than stellar (or anything), but it's still a good experience for me. This one is different.... A senior residential living facility. Very nice place. A fair amount of traffic as well.

It was a "different" experience today. The Massry Residence is an independent living facility for seniors. The photos were very well received, and instead of a "reception", I spoke about all the photos and the time was spent answering questions. That was about 1/2 hour; then there was a musical performance by a talented violinist.

That's a cool venue Neil - congrats!

Did you approach them* or did they* seek you out ... are exhibits like yours something they* do often?

(*them, they, they == Massry Residence)

Odd venue for your particular photography. Most seniors try to avoid falls...

In this case, they contacted me. The wall has a different exhibit every few months. Mine are up until April 30, but they asked if they could stay up longer. I said "probably", since right now I don't have any shows scheduled for May.

Actually, the cool thing is that now I have enough canvases (around 35) to have two (or more) simultaneous shows. My stuff will go up at Starbucks for the month of April.

LOL...in fact, someone asked me on the the shot with the rapids how close I was. It was a bit awkward describing a terrific place, telling them where it was, and realizing they could never go there.

I didn't have a lot of "adventures" to share, but I had to tell them my story about Kaaterskill this past fall, teetering on a big wet angled boulder next to the rapid stream with equipment and tripod (in a somewhat tenuous position on the slippery rock), and when I changed lenses, the lens cap of the lens going into the bag fell off onto the rock...sliding slowly towards the stream/rapids...so that I had to make a choice whether to reach down to grab it, risking either my tripod and camera, or even me, or letting it go into the stream. I chose to let it go...watching it slowly sliding towards the fast moving water...and sure enough, it went into the Kaaterskill never to be seen again. After I finished my shots, I put my equipment on the shore, and I did climb down to the water level, to see if maybe it was trapped in one of the little nooks and crannies in the water, but it was not.

Not exactly Indiana Jones material, but it entertained them ;)

I caught myself looking for a "like" button for this comment...

Anyway, very cool stuff, Neil! I wish I lived a little closer to check it out in person.

congratulations neil, love your work. Do you ever print anything on metal. If so what do you think?

I have printed a couple of shots on metallic finish paper, but I haven't tried to print on Metal yet. It's not cheap to do! Most of my prints now are canvas prints--I have around 35.

By the way, in this photo, to your right, behind me is a Chagall! It's a limited edition of 230 if I recall.

To your left in the back are the "Shapiros". ;)

Ah, yes, scalvert, while appreciating the pun, remember once they/we were your age.
and, boy, do we have memories. Such images as nshapiro's invokes can be vivid.

for example (and I've already shared this story with Neil) a very long time ago, I was dating a guy and tramping around the lovely falls in upstate New York. I had managed to get myself on a rock with a tempestuous falls on one side, and an abyss on the other. Not wishing to disgrace myself with the fellow I was with, I spend a very, very long time admiring the view, while surreptitiously plotting any way out. I found it. The guy was oblivious, and fortunately, we went our separate ways.

Meanwhile, Neil, nice show, and keep at it. The more you get your work out there, the more your name is recognized, and pretty soon, hey, what with your excellent images, and name recognition, sales will be yours.

Ansel Adams was successful at merchandising, and anyone who wishes to sell a 'product' must do the same.
