Mac App Store: $79.99
Apple Store: $199.00

Current version of Aperture is 3.1.1. Updates come from "Software Update". You'd want to make sure your software is registered and legit, in order to receive updates.

Don't know much about the "online specials". For a few dollars savings, I'd prefer buying directly.

On an unrelated note, will they ever release a new version of Final Cut Express? :-(

I've ordered from MegaMacs several times. They're legit and you still save those few bucks.

Apple don't really care about their pro apps any more. They're too busy grabbing all the money they can get from things like App Store and subscriptions.

Ah, but that's Pro. Will there ever be a new Express?

I decided to try out the 30-day trial of Aperture 3 before paying $60 or whatever for it.

And is it my imagination, or is just like a really slow version of iPhoto with better editing tools?

I dunno, but as soon as I go into the editor, moving sliders, doing noise reduction, it's like wading through treacle.

Have you tried Lightroom?

Yeah, I've got LR2 - I think I'll stick with it.

My wife hates lightroom for browsing photos/vids, and much prefers iphoto - So I was looking for something that'd keep us both happy.

No need! Final Cut Pro X is announced, and will sell for only $299, AND it will be available through the App Store. Great news.

I'm using Aperture on a lowly mac book pro and things move along very quickly. One thing... turn off the Faces piece so it's not running in the background. I'm recently switched from Capture One Pro back to Aperture and continue to be impressed with what it can do and how efficient the workflow is.

I don't think there is any comparison between the editing capabilities of Aperture and iPhoto. The general look of the applications is similar, but there is a lot of power buried in the aperture editing tools. I realize going with Aperture may be going against the mainstream, but when I see posts like this from guys that I think are doing amazing work, I have no doubt that the tool is more than capable of supporting my humble photographic efforts.
