Much better explanation Skip! Thanks.

Nice, Skip!! Makes me wish I'd gone to see the fireworks here somewhere but I sat at home instead (one cat gets quite frightened - the other seems to enjoy the noise.)

I like how the feeling goes from light and airy to downright angry with a couple of those. Love the wide, thick brushstroked captures. Those are quite amazing!

Thanks. But how do you print them? What software do you use to create them?
07/06/2011 09:42:33 PM · #54
Blurb has free software you can download - I use it to make my books. Then I upload the book to Blurb, order it, and they print it - even just one copy - and send it to me. Visit the site and take a look around. Give it a try!

There is other software you can use; Skip used something other than the Blurb software, but I don't recall what - preview his book, it's in the credits.

Oh, great! I am already using Blurb, I am just finishing my mother's-in-law autobiography - 252 pages of it! I haven't printed yet - is the quality OK? With 252 pages standard paper is the only option. I hope it will look OK as it is a present for her (the original was typed on a typewriter and photos photocopied with old fashioned A4 binding like those used years ago for Master's thesis).

I might join SoFoBoMo in future. Sounds like a great idea.

I've never done a text book, only photo books, but have done five so far, in all different sizes, papers, cover types. Very pleased with the quality in all cases. Awaiting my latest creation - due in on Friday. Ordered copies for relatives.

@deb: thanks!

Margaret, I did a 198 page book of text and photos last year and was thrilled. I really loved the way the photos turned out, as well as the insane price of $6.95 each!

I use adobe InDesign with the blurb.com plug-in, mainly because I'm able to generate a pdf that can be used online, as well as for print production.

Hey, Skip...getting started on my little book, I borrowed the language from your "page two" regarding copyrights, etc.

Then, after reading what I had 'borrowed' it occurred to me that I might want to ask permission of the author?
:)

lol, alice! that's all generic, boilerplate language ;-)

i've seen some a lot denser and wordier, and i've seen some with nothing more than an 'all rights reserved'.

you might want to flip open a two or three or four of your favorite coffee table books and compare their language and layouts.

Simple! Make at least 35 photos and put them in a pdf book, upload it and you're done. Almost as easy as entering a challenge.

Edit: Almost forgot. It has to be done in 31 days and entered before the end of August.

So, how's everybody doing? I'm up page 18 and have lots yet to go.
But dang, this is fun. It is like putting the pieces of a very
complicated puzzle together.

Well, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment, I signed up to do 2 books, one in July and one in August. I need a project for the summer months. This weekend is the start of my July fuzzy month. Topic is Festivals in Finland. Kicking off with Tammerfest in Tampere, then we have the Pori Jazz Festival also this coming weekend, the Flower Festival then the following weekend etc, etc. So I thought I'd try a documentary approach for this one. Let's see how it goes. Pori will be interesting as it attracts some big bands (not always anything to do with Jazz mind you!)

Just finished with the photos. It was delicious :) Now I have some post processing to do and make a book. Lots of work but it can be done in 2 weeks (I think)

Well, I learn something new every day. Sometimes two things! Like today.
I did my 'book' in Microsoft Publisher and then found it was not exactly compatible with BLURB,
(I chose 8 inches square; they like 7)
and then decided to just make a pdf - and stick it on my rudimentary blog.
Anyhow, after a lot of huffing and puffing, it's done and it may be that this link will get you a chance to look at it.

The little town I chronicled is about 45 miles down the coast and I made some five trips down there.
Heh Heh, 500+ miles is not a hardship along the beautiful Pacific coast, even in our July foggy weather.

Nice work Alice. I like the photos and the layout (just had a quick look). Don't forget to upload it to SOFoBoMo :)

I'm about 2/3 of the way through editing my pictures (about 75). Book layout is what I do ... I should be able to finish by my deadline of 8/3 ....

not for me, but i didn't do it for sales. i did it for the experience, the education, and to have something i could flip through. it was more than worthwhile all the way around.
I'll second all of that

Alice, well done. Nice collection. Hope you get it printed at some point.

I am busy taking pictures and trying to figure out the book making aspect of this. I actually got motivated by the DPC challenge for diners, drive-ins, and dives. I am taking photos of some diners in CT.

I am using Scribus for the first time. If any of you use it, can you help me figure out how to create a cover page with text? Thanks. So far,I have 27 images on pages with no text. I uploaded it, without realizing that it now says Complete next to it. Oops. I'm almost done. Hopefully, I can go to one or two more diners before the month is up.

Also, how do I use the pdf to quickly make a Blurb book? I have been making a separate Blurb book, but that just seems redundant.

Thanks so much. Congratulations to those of you who are finished or working on this too.
Sincerely,
Marina

Alice, what a delightful book!! I really enjoyed that - thanks so much for sharing that with us. Looks like it was a pleasure to "research" and shoot as well!

Marina, very much looking forward to yours - good luck and have fun!

@alice: what deb said! what a great little book, very well done! and now that you've done one, you can start a series ;-)

btw, you need to upload an image for the book thumbnail...at the moment, your book is one of the featured books!

@marina: i've never used scribus, but i've done a lot of pdf-to-book projects, using blurb for printing (in fact, that's one of the reasons i use blurb: i don't have to use their bookmaking software). the trick is that you have to produce a pdf to their exact specification in order for it to pass pre-flight. i use adobe InDesign, for which blurb supplies a complete set of automated templates. i don't know what other platforms they support with templates. good luck!

Skip, thanks for the heads up & the screen shot! I stuck the front cover on just now. If it comes up again in their rotation, well, there'll be something for people to look at!

And thank you all for your comments. It was fun to do, and yes, Skip, I'm even now thinking of the next little town to describe...heh heh.

I do have one question of you though. There's a pic of two people using binoculars held to their eyes. (Page 12) I didn't get model releases. Do you suppose they are anonymous enough to not require that?
