unfortunatly i am in a situation where the extra $150 will really make a difference...

so, how are the nikon refurbs? (specifically concerning the d5000). i would REALLY like to be able to buy brand new (new toys! shiny smell!) but if the refurbished version is just as good... considering i am not really concerned about minor cosmetic imperfections etc, as long as the pictures are good and the sensor is CLEAN (haha!)

opinions, anyone???

Can't speak for Nikon, but my 50D is a factory refurb direct from Canon. Haven't had a problem with it yet. I would expect Nikon's refurb program to be pretty good as well.

Check the warranty difference between the two. For $150 I'd find a CC or some way to get that extra $150 for the added warranty time.

Refurbs mostly are great, but if it's a pricey one purchase I'd rather have the full factory warranty.

I had a guy at the local camera shop tell me that Nikon cameras that are refurbished are actually higher quality than brand new. Something about quality control being higher for refurbished equipment. Don't know how true that is, but my friend that works there got a refurbed D7000 and it works perfectly.

I buy factory refurb whenever possible. Save lots of money on practically new gear. My Canon 40D was a refurb, my Dell laptop is a refurb, my iPhone was a refurb, my new Nikon 55-200VR is a refurb. Most do come with full factory warranties. Specifically, the Nikon 55-200 lens came witha full warranty.

The thing to remember about refurbs is that they are not the same as "used". For whatever reason they returned to the factory, they are completely reconditioned and repaired to "like new".

It's been my understanding that Nikon refurbs have a 90 day warranty, which is a far cry from the five year warranty that a new US Nikkor lens carries.
