So I'm playing with the trial version of Topaz Detail, and for the life of me I can't figure out what the BOOST sliders do. I know what the Small, Medium and Large detail sliders are doing, but the Small, Medium and Large Boost sliders have me confused. Half the time they change the color/saturation/contrast of my image but not the details.
Can anyone provide insight to the lost? |

I rarely touch the boost sliders, myself. Here is a Video tutorial from Topaz Labs on using Adjust. I think it describes what the boost sliders do somewhere in there. (The version this shows is the older one with a different screen layout)

I liked this tip:

Thanks, that explains it nicely. Although, I've found the boost does way much more to the image than just detail enhancement! |

Ever notice how, in PS, when you berk around with levels the color goes wonky? Same principle... Boost is changing local contrast and that is messing with the colors. Try converting to BW on a dupe layer, then run Detail or Adjust on the BW layer. Set the BW layer to luminance mode, and the color from beneath will come through and be less distorted. |

How do you come up with these combinations of steps???
This is another one of those combinations like the B&W layer set to multiply that you gifted to me awhile back. That combo has helped my processing numerous times and I'm gonna have to mess around with this one now...
...but still, where do you come up with this stuff? |

I see a problem and I try to isolate the root cause of it, then find a workaround. That, and too much time on my hands.

That's good advice, Bear_Music. There's a lot of power in Layers and blending modes.
