can someone explain to me how the wireless flash trigger works on the 60D and what kind of flash i need to have in order to take advantage of it?

Any sort of Canon Brand flash will work with it. 430EX, 430EXII, 550EX, 580EX, 580EXII and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head.

You have to go into the camera menu and turn on the option for controlling the wireless flash. Turn the flash into slave mode(varies by model you buy) and pop up the on board flash and use it. It's very simple and the Canon manual that came with the camera should explain it all.
