Hello,

My youngest daughter is having a birthday party in two weeks. We played with a Green Screen in the past and she really liked it. She asked if I could set it up and take photos of the guests and "put them in different scenes". I can easily do this with my current setup of umbrellas and 3 speedlights. However, I'm going to be shooting my oldest daughter's senior photos in about 6 weeks and was thinking ahead. Some of the senior shots will be indoor portrait types.

My question is about softboxes. I see that many are using this type and mounting on a light stand. Would this type work to really light up my green screen with even light? Is there something else I should be using?

What about light boxes with my speedlights? What is the "lighting" difference between boxes with speedlights vs 120w of fluorescents?

Thanks for your help.

Do you use the Nikon CLS system to control/trigger your speedlights, or radio triggers and manual setting. The Wesctott Apollo series of softboxes seem interesting to me, but with a caveat: the entire speedlight fits inside the softbox. If you use radio triggers/manual settings, you'd need to fuss with getting in there to adjust it initially, but once the settings are where you want them, you are good to go. I don't know, but I suspect that you could not get any reliable CLS triggering of speedlites with that type of softbox.

I have a 4 CFL light rig with japanese lantern umbrella. I doubt I could use it to light a group or a decent size background at shutter speeds suitable for stopping some kid like motions at a party :-) It makes a great office lamp, though! :-)

Since you are comfortable and pretty well "rigged" with three speedlights and umbrellas, I think a suitable softbox for speedlights is worth considering. You might also like to take a look at a 64" Silver PLM with a white front cover add on at Paul Buff. The silver gives you a beautiful collimated light, and the white cover lets you convert it to softbox sort of light. The white PLM also provides a more diffuse light than the silver, but still a bit more collimated than a white cover provides. It is also a wonderful light quality.

Thanks for the reply....I'd be using my Nikon SB600 and 800 CLS not radio so it would have to be on the outside of the box !

I'm looking around BH camera and the Alzo digital site.

Thanks again,
