I'm late to the party, but echo the 10-22 for the Lake District. I have only got two visible photos of the Lakes in my portfolio - at the bottom of the Honnister Pass(28-135mm @44mm) and
Ashness Bridge near Keswick (10-22mm @14mm)
I will post some more to my portfolio tomorrow, but I will have to go through and cull photos first as my portfolio is full.
Where abouts in the Lakes will you be staying? Are you planning on hill and fell walking, or are you going to be car based? |

If you're considering a fast prime, I'd definitely throw the Sigma 30 1.4 into consideration. It's magnificent. The 50 feels way too tele on an APS-C but the 30 is great. It is substantially more than the 50 1.8 though, so that's a bummer. It's also substantially larger and heavier, which is about the only reason I'm very fond of my 50 1.8- it's so small I can literally put it in my pocket. It's (the 30) very sharp even wide open and autofocus is surprisingly fast and accurate given the 1.4.
I love the Sigma 10-20 as well, but have always heard great things about the Canon version.
Depending upon the sort of vacationer you are, you may consider an ultrazoom like one of the many 18-200's. I've only ever used the Nikon one, and it does have inherent flaws, but if I have no clue what I'll be shooting, it's nice to keep things light with only a body/lens setup. I have lenses that do nearly every part of that range far better than it, but I don't always want to take all that with me. |
