The St-Valentine's Day challenge was a expert edit. 24h isn't enough to be able to really take full advantage of an expert edit. I work and would need more time to really meet the potential of an expert edit challenge.

I think it's time for an expert edit free study! To make it more interesting and force people to actually do more than just take another bug macro or whatever, one the rules for this challenge should be that "your submission must be made up of a combination of at least two photographs". This would force people to actually be more creative in ExpertEdit challenges.

What do you guys think?

While I agree that 24 hrs are not enough for an expert editing challenge, I think there is enough variation in challenge topics and the according rulesets. I don't need Expert at all, I rarely take advantage of Advanced rules even when I could. If there was an Expert Editing Free Study, I'm afraid there would be even a lot more of those overedited, overfiltered, eye-hurting images than in the Valentines challenge.

I think the Expert Edit is great for people to test their photoshop skills. You can do a lot of creative stuff in expert edit and it doesn't have to hurt the eyes. Elsapo's Hope shot

is one such example. NOt to mention others such as "kiwiness" etc

I would love to do some free study expert edits to let my imagination go wild. This site's purpose is to teach people and rules such "use at least images for your submission" would force people to at least try.

i like expert edit, but this is a photography site and expert editing borders on graphic design.

i say leave it for special occasions, not free studies.

you can always submits expert edits in side challenges if you want to showcase your work.

I'm not saying every free study... just one or 2 a year :)

While your example doesn't hurt my eyes, I see 5% photography there and 95% graphics. As mike_311 pointed out, DPC is a photography site, not a graphics site or Photoshop site.

Agreed 100%.

And there's also sites like Worth1000.com if you really need to play in "Expert editing" style more frequently.

Dang, you aint getting much support here eh Cristophe? I for one would like it, if for no other reason then to see what other people can do. I do not have the skills for expert editing but i like seeing the work of those that do

Ooooofffff, fianlly someone on my side :)

Worth100.com is a cool site but I'm loyal only to DPC and would like to get a chance, every now and then, to test my skills in graphic design....or else why do we even have the "expert edit" option?

I agree that Expert editing is wasted on a 24 hour challenge. My Valentine effort took 2-3 hours to pull off (about 2 hours shooting and 1 at the computer selecting images and trying some different editing styles) and that was just using basic editing. I have some great ideas for a final image that would use expert editing techniques, but in no way was I going to be able to pull that off in one evening.

I also agree 100%

How about having an "Expert" free study along with the regular free study. I'm just getting back into entering and if a challenge was Expert, I'd skip it. I don't have the skills to edit in expert, and even my best effort can't compete against expert. So make two separate free study challenges. Then I feel like I at least have a chance of scoring well, plus I would like to see what the photoshop gurus come up with. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

More specifically this image:

There have been three expert challenges in 12 months.

mike_311 made an excellent point that I agree with.

For me (and it's just for me cause I'm a beginner here) I need to master advanced editing before thinking about expert :) Of course, nothing stops me doing advanced in expert now that I think about it....

That's a fair statement and I can see your point, however, don't use the Free Study platform for an Expert editing challenge (unless there are 2 separate FS's for the month as just previously suggested).

The ideal way to handle working an Expert editing challenge in once in a while is to either have a "special" extra challenge, or sometimes make it one of the two choices for the Open challenge that is run every week.

I like that idea of an extra "special" challenge.

For example, every three months, there's one extra free study, but Expert Edit, so as not to take away the usual free study.

That would be great - but only with that extra multiple image rule; I think that is what would make it interesting.

Talk about challenges that are currently in voting :)

It's Langdon's attention you want to capture. Send an Administrative Inquiry requesting this. Presumably, if enought people ask, he would listen.
