A friend of mine is in a fashion model competition.
I was taking a few shots of her to put in her portfolio.
Here are 2 shots, orginal and edited.
What do you think?
You can post comments on the pictures after you click once on them.
I know the focus was a bit of in one of the shots but I think it gives it a soft touch.

It may just be my monitor but it appears that the camera focused on the lips on most shots rather than they eyes. Great shots otherwise.

your right - I was having some trouble with the focus.
The autofocus did not work properly due to low light still I had a 500w light source (bought a local hardware store).
Probably need like 1000w light, was down to 400iso, under 30 speed and F2.8

Ok, you need more DoF - smaller aperture (F10?) Get her eyes, lips, front of hair in focus. She could also use more interesting poses. But you'll have to ask heida on that.

Yes, need more stuff, the 500w lamp was not enough to light her properly.
Was stuck with F2.8 |

In my opinion the overbearing lipstick adds nothing to the image - that's why the sepia one is more striking. Her lips are a prominent enough feature (meant as a compliment) that they don't need such obvious highlighting. The poses are all ok, but maybe a little awkward.
As for your lighting, I wouldn't get a more powerful one, I'd get two or three more 500W ones. multiple light sources will blend the shadows somewhat, thereby softening the model, and levelling the background. I often use 500W halogens for people, but they can cast some nasty shadows and make features look harsh if not used correctly. Plus the combined wattage is both stronger (ergo faster shutter speeds) and easier on your models eyes (those things are bright.

I wish the shot of her laying down was so tightly cropped at the bottom. I'd liked to have seen some of the floor or whatever she was laying on to give some negative space below her.
BTW Heida, if you take up knitting.. maybe you can knit me a Blue Ribbon ;) |
