Thanks for the few comments I got on this shot. I got pretty much what I expected. Some people liked the shallow DoF, some people didn't. I really liked it personally but I'm aware that shots like this will probably never do well on DPC because of the huge range of tastes that people have.

None of the blurring was done in post processing, it was just created by an extremely shallow DoF. I reversed my 75-300mm lens at 75mm in front of my 50mm macro. The DoF was so shallow that any slight movement threw the whole thing out of focus. The actual flower was probably about the size of the finger nail on your little finger.

The post processing that I did do was to crop, dodge/burn, and desaturate all but yellow (the original had a blue cast). I then shifted the hue of the yellow to match it's actual colour on the flower. I also cloned out a few dust specs.

Here is the original uncropped image if you're interested:

Is there anything you would have done differently?

-----

If you want to see the same flower at reversed 300mm rather than reversed 75mm, here is an uncropped shot:

Seeing your remarks about how it was made, I now know something that was not apparent when I was voting- that it is a very small blossom magnified many times. I usually don't like shallow DoF but your entry had a certain warmth to it. I am at a loss regarding it's score, I'd have guessed about a point higher.

Thanks coolhar :) Maybe I should have titled it "Tiny Flower (MACRO SHOT!)" or something, hehe :)

Slightly off topic, but...

I noticed you left a comment during the challenge on your own entry, or at least, it looks that way. How were you able to do that? The first comment was from you, no?

What a yummy shot, Konador! It's very warm and inviting. I like the abstract feeling of the image as well. Should have scored higher IMO (unfortunately I didn't vote on the free study) but maybe it's a bit too artsy for DPC tastes. Good job!

Just a bug I found, should be fixed now :)

I don't usually think in these terms, but the first thing I thought when I saw this shot was this is a picture I would actually frame and hang on my wall. The textures, lines and colors rise above the subject, so I don't see how anyone could complain about the shallow DOF. I didn't really notice it at the time, but the selective desaturation really made this shot. And the best part of it was it wasn't obvious to me. (Sometimes selective desaturation hits you so blatantly it hurts!) And I definitely wouldn't change the crop - the original was perfect. Widening it just adds clutter.

Oh, and I also would never have guessed that it's such a tiny flower. But while that brings some technical interest, I don't think it has any aesthetic impact one way or the other. The finished shot stands out whether the flower was microscopic or as large as a sunflower.

One of my top picks for the challenge. Great work.

Thanks Scott :) The print has just been approved so now people can hang it on their walls if they want. Unfortunatly I couldn't get the same crop because DPCPrints doesnt offer that aspect ratio, but I got as near as I could. You could always cut a bit off the bottom if you want to get to the original crop, hehe.
