I was thinking of entering this in the June Free Study but changed my mind... I used Sigma 105mm macro EX to shoot this. Pls comment, I'd like to know what you think of the photo and how you would have scored it in the JFS.

Thanks in advance.

I'd have given it a 6...
The focus is impressive, but I find the composition a bit unimaginative, and you've committed the cardinal sin (in my book!) of perfectly centering the body of an animal/creature in your photo, where the focus should have been on the eyes/face.
There's a little too much glare, and some burnt out highlights.
It is a shame that the antennae, legs and rear of the insect are cropped out of the frame.
It is an impressive macro, but composition should still be a priority, and I'm afraid the composition here seems like a bit of an afterthought.

Loved your zodiac shot, by the way!

To me the crop is a little tight. I know it's always tempting to get as close as possible either by moving in or zooming in. This is one case where stepping back a bit to give a little context would have improved the image.

I love it!
DOF and point of focus are perfect for this shot.

If this was your reject, wonder what your submission was. I don't see it in your portfolio.

Yeah I wanted to get as close as possible to it in hopes of getting as much detail as possible but now I see how it affects the composition. I also realized it after I read Jacko's interview where he noted to take into consideration the composition when doing macro shots.

BradP: I didn't have an entry.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I like it. Only critique I would give is I would have liked to see the antenna. Those should have been in the shot, and with the back blurred it would draw the eye more to the head. Cheers
