Oh thanks. Kill my buzz....
But thanks for watching my back. I'll report when I get the camera, and let you know what/if there is an issue.
Edit to add that I got the shipping info. I payed for overnight, so I'll know soon enough.

Mine's charging!
And the box for the 70-200 2.8 is bigger than the box for the camera. I'm afraid to look at the lens! |

I have my fingers crossed for you...and I don't mean to be negative at all, but I suspect at best you'll get a call about required accessories.
Look at the prices of accessories on that page. Aluminum tripod with three way pan head...only $229! Not even a mfr name and it looks like a walmart special.
The way some of these places work is that if they don't make up the price difference on the accessories, your camera suddenly goes out of stock.
But I sincerely hope you make out ok...maybe you'll be the lucky one who they hope will give them good publicity.

OOH, it is nice. Try the Q setting--gives ya shivers, don't it?
I just did some test shots across the ISO range with it and my d90. About to compare. Hope I see a difference.... :-) |

For all who were concerned for me, thank you. It's good to know people have got your back :-) So here's the report:
I really felt the need to go FF as soon as possible because my Big Project is upon me, and I needed both the higher image quality and better low-lighting capabilities for the project than my D90 could offer. I did not want to wait for the D800 announcement just to find that the improvements are in areas that are not critical to me (i.e. built-in radio transmitter: nice but not "have to have"), and that the camera would not be available for another 8 months. And worse, it would be even less affordable. But the mortar-and-bricks price I was seeing was too rich for me, so I searched for the lowest available price, and saw it on Nextag for $1,779 (as posted below). I did read all the reviews, and I did some research on the company, etc. I also considered it was possibly a scam, but these days the buyer has a lot of protection from fraud and bait and switch tactics, so although on high alert, I was not afraid to try.
The bottom line: an almost painless process (save for the sting in the wallet...). I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it has not. I expected them to try to sell me more stuff, and they did try, but nothing any other seller wouldn't, and they did not insist or apply pressure of any sort. They wanted to make sure I had what I needed (memory cards, batteries, etc.). I did end up buying the battery grip (for the price I've seen online elsewhere) and an extended warranty. They're throwing in a camera case and tripod for being a first time customer (surely mediocre quality, but no charge for those items), which I may sell as a bundle with a couple of other "thrown in" items from other purchases elsewhere.
The camera arrived as promised. It's brand new, works perfectly. So the product was sold as described and for the price listed. No bait and switch. But I had some questions for customer service, which made me nervous as this was the area they got most criticized about. I just hate surly people, especially over the phone. But I've called them a couple of times now, and they remember my name, and are very courteous and helpful.
All in all, it was like any other business transaction with any other company, except that I had a concern hanging over my head that I might be "taken". The worst part of it all was reading all those negative reviews, which I did not experience in my dealings with them. I'm not saying they are NOT scurrilous and underhanded, but they were certainly not with me. |

| Congratulations Johanna. You will love having a Full Frame sensor, even if it is a Nikon. I'm glad you had a good experience with Samy's. I don't think I could use anyone but B&H though. |

It wasn't Samys (although I do shop there quite a lot). It was Grand Central Photo.
My mom's visit has coincided with the arrival of the camera so I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces. But the little I've used it, it's been fabulous.

Wonderful news Johanna! I was really skeptical about them after seeing all the negative comments on the Resellers rating site but really happy you had a good experience. :-)

Yes, it could have gone either way, of course. But when you're poor, your risk aversion threshold is lowered :-)
Now I just need lenses. My fabulous 60mm macro is great for portraits and, oh yea, macros, but just too limited for all the other stuff I want to shoot. |

I am very happy for you! The d700 is a superb camera. I am a big fan of battery grips, btw. Sure, they do add some weight, but they also add balance, better handling in vertical shooting, a little more inertia in unsteady conditions. (and of course the extra battery capacity--not to mention the little "tray" that lets you use standard AA batteries if need be).
When my d7000 arrived on a Thursday morning, I had to wait until the afternoon for my separately ordered battery grip to arrive! It was torture. Okay, well, seriously, though, the 24-70 2.8 is a weighty beast, and it was awkward, uncomfortable to hold the d7000 without the grip. Never felt like I had it securely in hand.
Without knowing the Super Secret Big Project, I cannot offer specific advice on lenses, of course. I will say that the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 primes are superb, and that, from what I have read, the 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 versions are dang near as good for a significantly lower price. Probably only pixel peeping would reveal differences in terms of image quality--the primary advantages of the 1.4 versions are probably the speed (duh) and the housing/construction. But with the high quality high iso performance of the D700, the 1.8 to 1.4 difference is probably not the $.
I have the 24-70 2.8, love it, good glass, but the cost is hard to swallow. I REALLY needed it for my stuff, so had to suck it up--one reason I went with the d90 at the time, instead of the d700 then--money left over for glass). I got the new 28-300 VR zoom as a walk around lens for upcoming travel, and I am happy with it. If you want to PM about specifics of your project, I would be happy to help if possible with ideas, info, and I am willing to swear to secrecy. Think of me as Gandalf: "Keep it Secret. Keep it Safe."
But above all Congratulations on your Most Excellent Camera! :~) |
