| So I've been looking to use CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) on my Canon SD780 IS to shoot in RAW. Would a tool like this be legal for DPC use especially if the time stamps and meta-data are still intact. I did a forum search and didn't see anything specific about the DPC legality of the tool. |

| Should be. All the hack does is enable the capability to write the RAW files, of course. What you should do is to shoot a test shot and submit it to the SC with a request to validate that it is an acceptable proof file. If there is any problem at all, they will let you know. |

I think as long as the EXIF data is intact you will be OK, though the suggestion of submitting a ticket with a test image is excellent.
However, I'd like to (but can't) add the *personal* requirement that you write up a How-To or Tutorial on using it. ;-)
I downloaded the files for my Canon S3 a while ago, but have never been able to get it to work ... :-(
You can get a free month's membership (extension) for any article we post in the Learn section(s) -- you could easily make this into at least two articles, one on installing and using the RAW capture and other functions, and one about converting those files to Photoshop/PSP/whatever for editing. |

Interesting. I never knew about the free month extension on membership on articles that get posted in the Learn section. Good to know.
BTW...I had it installed (CHDK) on my Canon S5 IS and got it working well enough. However for that camera, and I believe the S3 it only saves the RAW data as a .DNG which aren't currently legal. I believe I did manage to rename it in camera with a different extension to an older RAW format, but I think it had to be converted to the newer format or a DNG to be read. THAT I don't think or believe would be legal, but I'm not positive there.

I'm not sure that's correct, actually. I believe whatever the camera saves it as, is a valid original. I think the issue with DNG has been that, unlike RAW files, DNG files can be *modified* by downloading and processing applications, so you have to be careful not to *corrupt* the original when you're working.
I could be wrong...

I was about to say if DNG from camera isn't legal whenever i get my Pentax K-5 im not gonna be happy as I plan to shoot DNG. I can understand converting to DNG is not an acceptable original. Other raw formats CAN be edited, but are not open formats like DNG which makes it easier and more likely for tools to exist.

I mostly want to try experimenting a bit ... I doubt I would use the hack features as a routine part of my workflow. |
