I've been getting some comments that my pictures are a tish FLAT... Rmac, is a good friend of mine, and what looks BRIGHT and good contrast on my screen looks very flattish on his. SOOO Computer Geeks can you give me some advise? First I've got windows xp and a gateway computer, I have a Flat screen from View Sonic that is suppose to be a very good graphics screen (do graphics for billboard companies and it works well with their printers) the number or model is VA1903wb (if that means anything to anyone) I also have the i1 xrite screen calibrator and it does ambient light as well.. I went in to see what my contrast was set to on this in control panel and it says High Contrast Black (large) kind of thought maybe that was the problem, BUT I am NOT computer savvy and there were so many diff settings I was afraid to really mess stuff up... Any One have any suggestions?????

Thanks a bunch!! Katie

This visual calibration chart isn't a 100% solution, but it's a good start on making sure contrast and brightness are in the ballpark.

Maybe turn down the saturation on your monitor just a touch as well. Many of us tend to like nicely saturated colors, even though they are not accurate. So if your monitor is too high on saturation, what looks good to you may appear dull to others.

The best way of doing it is with a calibration device that reads the colors from your screen. It knows what they are supposed to look like and it creates a profile that is applied to the monitor output to get it in line. Of course, that costs a few $$. Here's one that goes for $71 on Amazon.

Thanks Steve...
I just recalibrated my monitor and used the advanced mode.. set the luminance to the default for LCD screens, OMG things have gotten DULL almost a blueish cast, However on your chart I can see a differance in every tone... If this is correct I am going to really have to get my eyes use to this.. How do you turn down the saturation or brightness in the monitor.. OK I am a TOTAL non computer geek... so A. where do ya find it? and how do ya do it? ( I'm thinking this thing I'm seeing now ought to be a tish brighter)

Yes, it takes getting used to. Our LCD screens are capable of such extreme contrast and sharpness it's way out of line with reality.

Anyway, on my machine you find the controls at Start>control panel>additional options>nvidia control panel...

There may be a control panel applet as Robert suggested. But that will only be there if utilities specific for your monitor have been installed. More likely, you just need to use the less than intuitive menus built into the monitor. It would be activated and controlled by the buttons that are usually on the bottom bezel of the monitor. The specifics will be different for every monitor. Here's the user manual for your monitor if it helps. (The link goes directly to open up the PDF file, so you might want to right click and save it to your computer.)
