To get above the wires and trees I shot the thundercloud sunset from my roof. The shots were about five minutes apart. Let me know what ya think.

Those are great. But, why the need for flash?

Do I understand you to say you used your camera's flash for most of these pictures? If so, why?

to brighten the clouds of course :)

I found if I use the flash, I got the true colors and not using the flash, the colors were washed out do to length of exposure increasing the brightness. With my SLR I could close the lens down and do the same thing. But with my coolpix I haven't figured how to do this, so I experimented and found the flash kind of does the same thing. Not sure why though.

You could probably do the same by using exposure compensation.. probably something like -1 EV, so that it's not exposing as much. Another issue, that i know happens with my camera, is that if i use the flash, it overrides the custom white balance and changes it to something thats a bit yellow-ish. This might also contribute to the difference in colors you're seeing.

Nice series, cool sunset! I love the things photographers do to get good shots. Like you standing up on the roof for sunset or me lying on my stomach on top of a rocky mountain slope to get the flowers from a cool perspctive:

Or any of the other crazy things we do :).

Thanks for the comments folks. Refracted, Thanks for the tip I will try it, also I think the different colors were do to the sun getting lower as they go from more whites to oranges and finally pink at last light. If I would have stayed, eventually no color justs shades of grays. Van
