Some really harsh voting over night. Went to bed with a 6.00 and expected it to drop, but not like this.

Looking at my voting pattern, I'm pretty convinced this is almost exactly where it will end up at the end of the week:

wow not what I expected to wake up to. Not just harsh voters last night. I think this whole month has been a rough one for voting. |

I too am wondering about the harsh voting. I almost wonder if there are a lot of new members who are interpreting the challenge description narrowly to be vehicle wheels. (but then again, maybe I interpreted it too loosely). I am at 5.6 with 25 votes. Started out with a 7. |

How the hell do I get a vote of 0? (Yes I know, a 1 from someone and a downward score revision.) I think it's a lot better than this, but the mass opinion disagrees so far.

I am a new member.....I interpreted the challenge as to take a photo of some sort of wheel where the wheel was the focus/subject. I did see a lot of photos of bicycles or matchbox cars. In my opinion they didn't fit the challenge since the wheel wasn't the subject of the image. That could be part of the harshness...... then again, my score took a pounding over night. |

I don't believe that's the case. Just seems like some harsh voting going on right now. Not sure what's going on. I didn't think I had a ribbon winner, but I also don't think it's worth what's being dished out right now. Ah, well, that's how the game is played. May be time for me to take a break from challenges.

That reminds me of a time someone's first vote was a 10, and they said that it probably wouldn't be maintained for very long. I thought it was funny anyway.

I think that's what my problem was--I was away from challenges and have either forgotten how to take a moderately good photo, edit a photo moderately well, or everyone's against me :)

There are many challeng entries that fall prey to the "not prominent enough" votes. I read the description a little differently.
capture any type of wheel in your photograph.
I read this as saying that say the wheel did not need to be the main subject, just that it needed to be in the photograph as a major element. I can also see how this is subject to personal interpretation. You have to vote as you see fit.

I think I'd disagree with you. Especially since the challenge description gave such a list of wheels:
"From the car to the roulette table, wheels of all types abound! Your challenge this week is to capture any type of wheel in your photograph."
Wheels in cars are part of a car... and it's a suggestion in the challenge description, therefore why should wheels of a bike be down-voted?

I wrote a program to calculate the votes for me. That helps a lot.

We whine and cry in the scores thread, on the shoulders of the same people that are dishing out those low votes.

I think your view might be a little narrow -- it doesn't say that the wheel needs to be the subject of the challenge -- you just have to capture a wheel in the photograph. I usually interpret that as the wheel should have some prominence, but doesn't necessarily need to be the main subject.
BUT -- that being said -- there is no right or wrong, just how you interpret it.
But you'll find that your scope tends to widen the more that you're here and the more challenges you experience. Interpret the challenges however you see fit -- but also keep an open mind while viewing the photos. I have found that I've gone into the challenge with one definition, and then had a completely different definition after seeing the images and voting.
It's a fun process. Welcome, and enjoy the ride!!!

Haha! I don't think I have the 'author' part of my exif in lightroom set so they can't know it's me!
Conveniently enough, we can all see DChap's score since it's his first challenge. Just look at his average vote received in his profile :)

That's actually darn good for a first challenge and an average many people would be pleased with.

You're doing better than many of us - I'd be happy with a 5.5xxx! Often the scores rise during the week so you very well may end up with a high 5 on your image. And no, we can't see your image, just your score. :-) |
