what is this failure to meet 20% that you speak of? |

If people vote on less than 20% of entries by the time it rolls over, all of their votes get scrubbed (though their comments remain).

Also, pattern voters have their votes scrubbed. Not sure of the parameters of that rollover algorithm, but I think it's still operational. |

I imagine that is a way of preventing people from signing up for an alternative account and voting high for themselves and low for others? |

My score is steadily rising. I might just scratch a 5 |

Got some love since last night, I have now moved over 5...highest since challenge started! REALLY hoping it stays there, as that is my first goal for 2011.
Although, kind of sad to think I'm happy with a 5.0 ... |

Exactly. I am no longer happy unless it is over 6.0. But then there is always the next challenge :) |

from what I can tell, anything over 5 on this website is a good image, something that impress your friends. am I right about that?
if I am, you should be proud of your 5.0 |

Most shot above a 5 would impress most non photographers. But I think I've seen it posted elsewhere, and I feel the same way. 5.5 and above means that it is a decent shot and has broad appeal with most DPC'ers. 5.0-5.4 usually means that it is still a decent shot but is lacking something. 4.9 and below usually means there is something really lacking.
There is a group though that regularly get lower than a 5 because they are entering shots that they know are not going to be popular with the mainstream DPCers, they enter shots and are looking more for comments from like minded photographers than for high scores. |

Uhh...so you are only allowed to enter 'real' challenges if you are looking for broad appeal?
I would rethink that if I were you. |

I would rethink that if I were you. | Not sure what you mean? I meant that if you are after comments Side Challenges are great for that purpose. The scored Challenges are more about scores, I guess. And I'd rather aim for a higher score than a lower one - am I the only one with this understanding?
PS I think if you check the archives you will find that there is a clear relationship between scores and number of comments - the higher the score the higher the number of comments (statistically speaking)

no i think i agree with you, the challenges are score driven....who has the highest wins....
if i want comments i would enter a side challenge or just a general critique |

i think what flora was trying to get at, is if you have an image that you know is not a winning image, and you know it would not score high, you enter it into a side challenge in order to just get more comments and critiques instead of just negative votes. |

I don't agree that it's all about the score. Sometimes I choose an image for the score it might get but often I go for something else. My favourite images and my highest scoring images are not at all alike. Sometimes I submit an image than I know is just what I wanted to achieve and I want to showcase it; I also know it won't score very highly, but I will get comments from people that will make it worthwhile. |

Nope. She said what she meant.
Some people enter challenges to try to make strong impressions with a smaller group of people.
For instance, look at these photos by skewsme
25 comments score of 5.5424
22 comments score of 5.5829
or from cutout
15 comments score of 4.0513
I have also entered photos that I knew wouldn't do well, but that I thought would make strong impression with maybe a smaller set of people

These are mainly good abstracts that do not appeal to the mainstream voter but they are good photos.
I will follow the slippery slope I am getting myself onto :) - these are an exception rather a rule (statistically speaking) |

I just added two of my own, funkier shots that aren't particularly abstract, but I really liked, but I figured they wouldn't have general appeal. They did get a lot of comments.

I think what everyone is trying to get at is this. There are some who enter challenges more for the chance at getting recognized by the posthumous crowd. If they won a regular ribbon they would love that too, but they are equally as happy to get recognized by people who regularly post to that thread. They look for comments from those people. So if their score isn't great but they got a great comment from posthumous or several other DPC'er like him, then they achieved what they were trying to achieve. |

I think the question marks were more that I said I added two pictures when there's only one. :)
