I'm seriously considering buying a tripod and ball head from Really Right Stuff. I know they are pricey and high quality. I use a Canon 5D Mark II with battery grip and my longest lens right now is a Canon 70-200L IS. I'm thinking of getting their mid-range setup of a TVC23 tripod and BH-40 ball head, L plate and mounting plate for my lens. Does anyone here use such a setup? Would I be better off stepping up to the full sized TVC33 and BH-55 even though it's good 2 lbs heavier? What are your thoughts on ball head clamp options?

I'd strongly favor the larger ballhead; the smaller one felt fussy to me, the larger one just right. From a functional perspective, the significant difference between the tripods is the height at full extension. The 33 is 6 inches taller. If you're 5'10" or less (I estimate) the 23 will suit you; otherwise, you'll want the 33. Note that these tripods do NOT come standard with a center column, but you can buy one for an extra 100 bucks to fit the 33. I am not sure about center columns for the 23.

To be honest, I think the tripods are ridiculously pricy... But I love the heads, the L-mounts, all that machined gear. I'd love to have gear from them. Or Arca-Swiss, for that matter.
