Well, it might be newcomer's skill ... I think there have been about 5 first-place ribbons won by participants with their first DPC submission, not counting the very first (which was automatic), and maybe 2-3 more which won but were DQ'd.
It can happen any time a talented photographer comes across DPC for the first time ... :)

You sure do, but also keep in mind that many of us admire photos that don't get ribbons, too!
